Since a large part of buying this game for me is eventually having the option to play through the whole series with a constant character, I'm curious as to where this game stores save files. I've noticed that the "save" folder in the GOG Baldur's Gate folder only seems to have some Tales of the Sword Coast related "Mission Pack Save," and not anything related to my current playthrough. (Though I've been loading that playthrough since quitting and relaunching the program and everything, so the real saves are *somewhere*.)

Does anyone know where the players' saves are stored, and how to transfer them over when GOG releases BG2?

Sounds like you are using Vista or Win7 and have used the default installation location of Program Files or Program Files (x86).

Best option is to install to a non-protected folder, such as C:\Games or something. Any folder you create as yourself that isn't in an OS protected folder. If you install to your own location then the original save folders in the game may then work fine.

Other than that, try searching your OS user folder.

I had a similar issue finding the saves for Icewind Dale. I eventually found then my doing a search of my hard drive on the name of the save game. I found them in:

<username>\Appdata\Local\VirtualStore\GOG.com\Icewind Dale Complete\mpsave

I noticed there were several game directories out there, including Baldur's Gate, so check here:

<username>\Appdata\Local\VirtualStore\GOG.com\
