If it is not a pre-made character with good visual design & deep story - yes, they are unpopular.

Customization. Even here on this forum we have several ... alternatively-oriented or progressive (choose either) , who want to create their version of 'hero'.

This is kinda my point. It's all the variety of Sarkisian's "I'm a woman, so I can't relate to male characters" BS. Only "progressives" think that you can't play a character that isn't like you. Of course, it can be true if the character DOES something that you don't like, but as far as character LOOKS is concerned there is no difference.
