Just a quick question:
I want to play retro games: which 90s RPG game do you like the most?
Might and Magic series
- if you want retro experience then III-V should be your choice
- I and II are dated and not that interesting, you can easily skip them
- VI-VIII are my favorites but the last one was released in 2000.
- Forget about IX.

So yeah, I guess III-V would be the best choice here
Here's Some that i like:

Ultima 6-7
Wizardry 6-7 but you should also play 8 even though it's not 90's but it's just great.
Fallout
Planescape Torment
Might and Magic 6-7
Dungeons and Dragons Dark sun Series
Forgotten Realms All Collections
Jagged Alliance i wouldn't really call it a real RPG but it's worth playing.
Daggerfall

Final Fantasy 5 is probably my favorite. Unfortunately, it was not initially released in the US (though that was later rectified, first by fans and later by Square themselves), even though the inferior FF4 and FF6 did see US release.

There's also the Romancing SaGa games, which did not see US release, and SaGa Frontier, which did. (Note that SaGa Frontier is not at all balanced; I don't know how the Romancing SaGa games fare in that regard. I should probably note that Final Fantasy 6-8 are not what you would call balanced either (FF8 is especially bad here).)

Dragon Quest 6 I enjoyed; the remake of Dragon Quest 3 is also really good. (DQ5 I didn't like as much, and I prefer the original versions of DQ1&2 over the SFC remakes for the most part.)

While very different, the Might and Magic series might be worth looking into; 3-7 were all released in the decade, and I believe all of them are very good (though I haven't played 6 or 7).

Ultima 6 is quite good; Ultima 7, not so much. (I wouldn't even bother with Ultima 8.)

(I should note that I found Baldur's Gate, a rather famous RPG, to not be that good. Same with Final Fantasy 7. (But note that those two games are dissimilar.))
Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos (1993 floppy, 1994 CD)
Albion (1995).

This answer exactly.

M&M III I've played through several times. The graphics and sound are obviously very badly dated, but it's a fun game nonetheless. IV and V should be installed together, as they combine to form one massive game. It uses the same engine as III, so no graphical updates, but an even better story and just tons of great play to be had.
Ultima 7, the pinnacle of the Ultima series and one of the best computer games of all time.
Ultima Underworld 1&2, two awesome games ahead of their time
Baldur's Gate, the revival of isometric western RPGs
Betrayal at Krondor, all around very good game in an interesting world (I recommend to read the Midkemia novels too)
System Shock (more action than RPG)
System Shock 2 (falls just within the 90-es and is awesome!)
Realms of Arkania (Star Trail, Blade of Destiny and Shadows over Riva), a nice German RPG series set in the world of the Pen&Paper RPG 'Das Schwarze Auge'.

The Quest for Glory series are worthy 90s RPGs, even though they were hybrids. The VGA remake of 1 and the 4th particularly. You can play the recent fan remake of 2 as well.
Fallout 1 and 2 definitely.
Constructor
Fallout
If end of 90's still counts, then Planescape: Torment. Ok, and Baldur's Gate; it's a classic after all, even if I didn't like it nearly as much as BG2.

Otherwise, Eye of the Beholder 1&2 and Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos, for my taste.
And hacked/modded Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures with community modules.
Albion is cool, too (even if I never managed to beat it because I ran out of ammo in the penultimate fight or so ...).

I liked Dark Sun: Shattered Lands the most, The sequel, DS: Wake of the Ravager not as much.
Chrono Trigger and Breath of Fire IV are among my fav in the 90's JRPG league.

As RPG i recall an Amstrad CPC dungeon RPG that blew me away, BLOODWYCH!
Don't have new titles for the list, just adding another "vote" for Planescape: Torment (the writing, characters, story, if not so much the gameplay), Betrayal at Krondor, Might and Magic 6 (the reduced freedom of character development in 7 rubbed me really wrong) and Quest for Glory 2 and 3 (couldn't get into 4 myself).

Hm, actually, not that it's anywhere at the level of those, but since Final Fantasy games were mentioned, I'd actually throw Septerra Core to the list as (Western-made, PC-only) JRPG. Enjoyed it a fair bit more than the FFs I played, 7 and 8.
