I haven't been there for years now, mind you - so I don't know, what kind of people are there online nowadays.

A few years back, I had the same idea like you - going in a chatroom, and have some -hopefully- funny conversations with total strangers, like in the past...I have to say, it didn't go so well...first of all - I was one of the (if not THE) oldest users in the chat...and it really was not funny...rather disillusioning and depressing actually. :o(

But going by your post, you're 23 years old?
So, maybe the average age is more fitting to you than to me old fart ;)
Then there are places like Gaia Online (actually, I don't know of anything other like it, then again, I haven't exactly looked for anything similar either), which are somewhere between a forum and an MMO with various activities.

Not sure about that; I think this close-mindedness has always been around--at least in the society where I live in--even before social media anyway. But as I said, my experience with social media is quite minimal; I don't really browse FB for news or whatever it is in there, I just use it to upload company related content for promotional purposes (I don't have a personal account) so I can't really comment any further.
