Ophelium: Probably won't pick it up after how the last one really upset me.
Zoidberg: Oh? How if I may ask? You got my curiosity tickled...
This is the description of the original game:
"Take the role of Young as you explore and fight your way through over twenty nature, urban and abstract themed areas in the human Young's subconscious, ranging from diverse, monster and trap filled dungeons, to passive and friendly pastoral landscapes. Anodyne's aesthetics are presented with a 16-bit-era visual style and a moody, dream-like soundtrack. Are you ready for a nostalgic adventure in the land of classic pixelated action-RPGs? Are you up for some deep and moving storytelling? All this and more awaits you in Anodyne."
Okay, sounded good to me. I whack monsters with a broom and the game is a light-hearted serviceable Legend of Zelda clone, despite the "It's over your head" plot, which, in retrospect, seems deliberate and snobbish. About two-thirds of the way in, that all gets subverted.
SPOILER ALERT:
I end up in a black and white town and go to talk to an NPC. Instead, I stab them. I suddenly realize I'm not using a broom anymore but a knife. And you have to kill everyone in town to progress.
After that, I slogged to the end of the game, got the stupid sunset ending and forgot everything else about Anodyne except that I stabbed a bunch of people. That wasn't the game I was expecting to play. Maybe if I had seen that part coming, I might have been alright with it, but it was sudden and, honestly, unwelcome.
I muddled with the post-game, which basically involved poking around outside the borders of the game to find collectible cards. I stopped caring and started hating Anodyne for pulling that twist on me. Personally, it's one of if not
the worst game I've ever played.
