So I bought a Steamlink last fall on sale for $20ish. Didn't want to risk $50 as I wasn't sure it would work.

Is it supposed to work with non-Steam games? If so, how? If no, why not?

I've been using it for Marvel Puzzle Quest (a Steam game) with a Steam Controller, which just replicates a decent mouse basically. (I do wonder if this setup would be good enough for like Civilization or other turn based strategy games...obviously an RTS isn't going to be good enough!)

I've also used it with an Xbox 360 controller with Citizens of Earth, and now I'm playing Sonic: Lost World with the same setup. Sonic in particular is pretty amazing..it just launched right up and is virtually indistinguishable from a console game being rendered in the same room.

But I installed my GOG.com copy of Crysis, and...can not get it working.

Even with it set to "run as admin" and even with the Crysislauncher.exe added to Steam, I get a UAC prompt, run back to enable it, run out, and at best I can see the game running, but it doesn't "see" my Xbox controller.

Some people claim they're running GOG games with a controller through it, but...I can't figure out how, unless this is something unique to Crysis...

Frustrating as most of my library is on GOG (and I'm sure as hell not buying Steam games just to get the Steamlink working). I really thought this was supposed to work with anything, not just Steam games...

It is supposed to work, yes, but you probably need Steam to configure the controller.

As far as I understand, the Steam Controller should be able to work as XInput, DirectInput, and mouse+keyboard, depending on how it's configured, where the default is mouse+keyboard.

The XBox (original, 360, one) controllers are XInput-only (unless you use third-party applications to "translate" it to DirectInput), so if Crysis doesn't understand XInput (I don't know what controller protocols the game supports), it's understandable that it can't see an XBox controller.

Just use a keyboard (or keypad) and mouse (with a xbox controller for certain games) don't drm your hardware as well!

I am not going to check it (by installing Crysis), but I wouldn't be surprised it doesn't have XBox360 gamepad (=XInput) support.

Reason being, it was originally a PC-only FPS game, and those quite often supported only mouse + keyboard. Years later Crysis was apparently ported to consoles, not sure if the PC version received a "gamepad update" at that point.

FPS game which get console versions either at the same time or even before the PC version are more likely to have XInput gamepad support.

Don't tell people how to live. It's their choice. FYI Steam Controller rocks.
Thanks guys! That's a great idea about it possibly not supporting Xinput controller.

I double checked PCGamingwiki though, and supposedly it only supported Xinput.

(Actually after messing with it on my PC, I have to say I REALLY like how they mapped the controls in the console Crysis 1 and 2 to the controller...like it sort of seems like the PC version has more complicated controls without actually giving you more options.)

The next two games I'm thinking of playing aren't available on GOG, so I'll have to look into this again later. I sure hope it's somehow something with Crysis and not all non-Steam games.

Is there some better streaming box?
