Darklands - one of the best CRPGs ever made - unfortunately never got a sequel.
Its creator, Arnold Hendrick , unfortunately died from cancer last month.

Apparently he was finally working on a spiritual successor to the game, according to one of his friends:

Apparently the game's development will still continue. God knows if it will ever be made or not. Still it's a good news for the game fans to know that Arnold had returned to business.
Wherever Hendrick is now I hope he'll manage to help his friends continue his legacy.

Everyone who's an RPG fan should give this classic a go:

Damn shame but i'm going to temper my expectations with this, it would be amazing if it turned out great and they continued his work in a faithful way but i know how this usually goes.

I have played countless hours of Darklands over the decades. To be honest, I'm not sure I want a true sequel. The change in graphics alone would be a shock to the system. What I would wish for would be what Hendrick alluded to in the manual...additional maps to be based on the same game setup. It would be nice to explore Hungary, France, Italy, etc.

Thank you Mr. Hendrick for such a wonderful game.
I wouldn't want a direct sequel to Darklands but rather new games that took the basic concept of Darklands as a historical RPG and applied it to other settings. Instead of the Holy Roman Empire, how about ancient Egypt or Mesopotamia, the Old West, feudal Japan, classical Greece, etc.
I could see a follow-up on the original intent of expanding out into other regions adjacent to the HRE in he same time period. There is a lot going on there at that time. It's the turning point between the old tradition and the new that we know now, with respect to the "western tradition", anyway. However, a well designed core engine that could be used in all cases would be key. Then you could have whatever you wanted in just this one time period (15 C.) whether it be the Ottoman/Hungarian/Bulgarian conflicts, the Hundred Years War, the War of the Roses, the Spanish Reconquista, the Communal wars on the Italian peninsula, the rise of the Muscovite Rus, or whatever. Even the Holy Roman Empire. But, it would require a rebuild from the ground up. :) -mwirkk

Wasn't Serpent in the Staglands a spiritual sequel of sorts? I know we're talking direct sequel, here, but, well, since someone mentioned not really wanting a true sequel, at least there's that, I guess.
Honestly, I'd just settle for a new port/remaster of Darklands with new quallity-of-life improvements like tooltips etc.
I tried to reach out to him on his public Instagram profile to see how's the project is going few weeks ago, no response, seems like the project just died. I'll be happy to be proven wrong.
