This happens to me with horror games. The best solution I have found is to play together with a friend.
It ruins the horror atmosphere, but it is fun!
Mother of god ! I've tried Europa Universalis years ago at college and it was the most daunting, complex and unextricable thing I've touched in my life. 30 minutes and a fifteen years later, I'm right back at the same stage.

And yet there it is again, taunting me again. :)
Let me tell you something about Planescape Tormant. It has a portal system where it only opens if you find some completely obscure, cryptic item.

In the Mortuary I need some, "Hooked" Finger something like that?

Cryptic puzzles are ridiculous.
Crusader Kings II. To be fair its the amount of DLC that intimidates my wallet. :-)
Seriously, though, Civilization was intimidating at first, until I finally got into it. Horror games don't bother me.
Oh, and the old Microsoft Flight Simulator games. I remember the 1.0 version. Asked for it for Christmas because it looked "fun". Then I got it and I swear the manual was several hundred pages. Yikes. Tried it for awhile but just couldn't get the hang of it.
To the Moon... I read it is very emotional, and I have a too soft heart, feeling deeply.. :/

Zeeaire: Oh I nearly forgot Realms of Arkania...
I remember that one. For starters, so many of the skills are completely useless because they were not actually implemented in the game. Secondly, there's no way to find out what all those spells with weird names actually do (I mean – "Plumbumbarum", is that something for unclogging your toilet?). Then the unforgiving level-up system governed by RNG and chance. Theoretically, you can have all your skill points fail, wasting an entire level-up, which are so rare. Oh, and you can forget about save scumming, as the game takes away a number of XP each time you save. Even if you somehow brave the cruel character building mechanics, you will set off into the wilderness without a bedroll and catch a disease. Or have a critical fail with your weapons and get a gangrenous wound.

coxdr: X-com: UFO Defense - I never had the time to really learn this game though I want to. I am always super intimidated when I play it and have hardly got past the beginning of the game.

GabiMoro: snip
In addition to the very helpful advice that I've cut above, whenever I'm hiring soldiers I go through the stats of the ones I've recruited and fire any with a firearms / shooting (whatever it's called!) skill of under 60. Much below 60 and you'll find they just can't shoot for shit.
I only know that Civilization is addicting and you'll just play through the whole night so you can finish that campaign. Never start playing Civ during your finals. Believe me, just don't ;D

Haha exactly.
Some of the spells sound pretty hilarious.
And why would someone want to conjure a harmless blast of wind, a rainbow bridge or turn an enemy into a mushroom?
And the promised chimaera can't be summoned according to what I've heard, some neccessary items just don't exist.
Yeah, never forget your bedroll, or your warm cloth, else you catch a cold or in German a 'Brummschädel' for whatever reason it is called like that, I would rather think you get that from spending a merry drinking session in the local bar :o
Maybe there's a sense behind the spells, maybe some are indeed plain useless, one will never know, first you would have to find the right scope of application but I don't want to imagine how much time would be required...
A number of XP is taken away each time one saves? oh nice to know, never noticed that :D
It could have been an entertaining game if it wasn't for all these complications :S but some people can probably deal with that^^
Falcon 4.0

Any of the major Gary Grigsby wargames.
Did you ever wanted to play a game but you're just intimidated by it?

Did you ever want to play a game but you're just intimidated by it?:-)
I've beaten three Wizardry games, but I just can't commit to Wizardry 7. Where Wizardry 6 felt like an adventure with reasonable challenge, Wizardry 7 seems like a tedious exercise in constant back-forth-back-forth-backtracking and too many encounters with too many enemies with bloated HP.
Apparently GOG wants to intimidate us some more by signing a contract for the grand strategy publisher Paradox Interactive ;-)

Elmofongo: Also there is this mansion where you needed magic to finish off trolls or else they will come back (and there are moments you have no mage in your party. Yeah its things like that why BG 2 can seem intimidating.
You don't need a mage, you only need fire or acid to finish off trolls, so a sword or arrows that do that sort of damage once they're nearly dead will do.
