For me, it's the newest XCOM RTS games. I'm intimidated by the possibility they will be too difficult, or they will not live up to the pedigree of the old XCOM games, or both. Maybe it's misplaced and I shouldn't feel intimidated, but I do.
Yeah, basically for me its the grand strategy's. They all look so cool and fun once you learn to play them, its just learning to play them I get stuck at lol :D

drealmer7: This is a good thread, so I'm bumping it!

Another set of intimidating games for me are the old D&D games that have recently been released on here. Will their UI/clunkiness be hindering to enjoyment? Is there too much to learn that I'll be out of my depths? As appealing as they are and as much as I want to experience them, the *unknown* factor for me is intimidating. I hope to try them someday, though!

Here is a nice FAQ that explains some of the 2nd edition D&D rules you will encounter in many 2nd editon D&D games here on GoG. While not all the D&D games use 2nd editon, many do. In fact, the top of the FAQ lists some of the D&D computer games in which these rules apply. While this info will not help with UI issues and such, it can help in other ways

P.S. - I did not create this FAQ but have used it as a source of information.

Thanks, it's not the rules that I find intimidating though.
Old XCOM games/Xenonauts and old-school crpg like Might & Magic.

Everytime I try to play them I don't know what to do. I think I'm too young to be part of the generation that enjoyed games like this.
Fire Emblem... My biggest fear is my units to die. It frustrates me having to restart a chapter because of an unit dying.
Dwarf Fortress. The description makes it sound like everything I'd want in a game...and then I attempt to crack it open and bounce off. Hard.

EDIT - After posting the above, I did a quick search and realize that this game was already discussed. But I stand by my statement.

Might want to try Gnomoria - it is essentially a more user-friendly version of Dwarf Fortress. The major downside is that the game hasn't been around as long when compared to Dwarf Fortress, so it has less meat to chew upon.

The latest entries have an option to disable perma-death.

Dark Souls. It just sits there staring at me on the shelf. One day Dark Souls, one day!
While there are a few games I would not not mind mentioning, I'll give just one:

Patrician III

I never played the first two games and bought Patrician III during a GoG sale a few months back. I have never played a game like this. It is really out of my territory.

Hm, I wonder if The Cat Lady would qualify in my case, too. I've been meaning to play it since I've read quite a few posts praising it to the skies, and the beginning promises that it might hold some food for thought, but the horror and serial killer(?) stuff makes me fear that it might be disgusting, gruesome and over the top just for the sake of it and with no deeper meaning. From the first time I tried to play it, I also remember that there was a lot of mono- or dialogue in the exposition part and that I took an infinite break after that, because it was so exhausting. I also played a bit of Downfall and found it both somewhat interesting and somewhat off-putting, and I'm afraid The Cat Lady might be quite similar to it, and more of a niche game for horror fans than a deep story-telling adventure that everyone should play.

Do you mean you're unsure whether to buy them or do you own them already and are just hesitant to play?

Hells no, son! I'm not scared of any game. Crusader Kings and Dwarf Fortress could surround me in a bar at knife-point and I’d be all like ‘Psssh! You got nothing!’ Then I’d slap Dwarf Fortress around some, and moonwalk outta' there like it ain't no thang.

Oh god I'm terrified, where's my snuggie.

I'm not sure if this is the right thread but I can't play any horror games they're too spooky for me.
During the pinata sale I got Outlast and in total of 40 minutes of playing I quit and uninstalled the game!

Break down of time-
- First 20 mins- I make it to the basement and am tasked with turning the generator on when I flip the first switch I hear someone approach the door so I hide.....

- Final 20 minutes- I'm still in the closet scared beyond belief because that little bugger won't leave the area and it's too dark.

I ended up watching Pewdiepie play it......
Never. I actually like complexity and complex systems in games and I can quickly get disappointed if game isn't on par with hype and/or my initial expectations in this aspect.
