The Steam version has a lot of problems with modern hardware like crashing, freezing etc. Steam doesn't really do anything to make old games playable on modern hardware. They just sell the games and that is it.

Can't speak for every bug the game has, but it still crashed (badly, in fact - corrupted my save) when I reached Antarctica and started making my way through the VersaLife base. Until that point, the crashes would happen rarely and were not as severe (I had a few in the Cairo Arcology sections, that I recall).

As far as I recall, the game ran flawlessly when I played through it a year ago (on Windows 8.1).

I don't know, but what I know is they are different. GOG version can be played on Linux on wine just fine, while steam version will crash. So there is certainly improvement in GOG version

The PCGW entry for the game confirms as much - "The GOG.com version of Invisible War is treated as the UK version."

The GOG version, naturally. I don't have a Steam account. :)

I may have run the game in compatibility mode though. It was probably running on my Intel HD Graphics 4000 card (either that or on NVIDIA GeForce 610M).

I didn't have any stability problems with it.

The only issue I remember having with the GOG version of DX:IW is that it would display my desktop instead of load screens. This did not happen with my original disc version and whatever PC I was running it on back when the game came out. The load screen issue did bother me a bit, so I set my wallpaper to solid black (I suppose I could have used a DX themed wallpaper) and all was good after that.

If you do have problems, it could be down to your particular hardware configuration, drivers and/or OS. The system I played through the GOG version on was my 2013 Alienware 17 laptop (Intel Core i7 4700MQ, 32GB DDR3 RAM, Nvidia GeForce 765M w/2GB, Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1), which is running Windows 8.1 Pro x86-64.

The Visible Upgrade mod fixes that loading issue.

I initially didn't have any problem with it occurring but once I came to realize just how frequently the game loads it became harder to simply ignore.

Steam fanboy detected. Inititializing remote bitch slap. Anyway, you could say a used car dealership that sells cars without brakes is still a used car dealership. And what kind of fool actually defends a digital games store selling games that aren't made to run on modern hardware? Do you, as a consumer, enjoy spending time and effort getting games to work on your hardware yourself or enjoy buying games and then having to get a refund? Seriously. "It's a store!" is a poor argument and makes you come off as a Steam fanboy or troll.

i have completed the game on steam over 5 times apart from random crashes while level loading sometimes , the only problem is the steam integration is broken after you launch the game as the game switches executable. so no game time tracking , no screenshots etc.

not sure if the gog release is any different than the steam one, will try it out in windows 10 and get back.

Both releases are updated to the latest 1.2 version.
