It's called Phoenix Point. All we have to go on right now is some concept art and descriptions, but I'm liking what I've seen thus far.

Here's a quote from his PC Gamer Weekender talk, too:
"[Phoenix Point] will in fact be an X-Com style game. It will have tactical turn-based missions, geoscape, destructible terrain, character progression and so on."

And the kickstarter is up on fig: link

So the million-dollar question:

Will this be available on GoG?
I was unaware, so thanks.
Hope it's a good game!
Aren't there too many X-Com style games lately? O_o
(not here, in general)
If it's similar to the old ones I'm definitely interested, if it's like the modern X-Com games I'll probably pass.
I get my current classic-but-modern X-Com fix from the Xenonaut game, where game #2 is in the works.
However I can never have too many of these games, not that are that many around.

There are not. There are many games that are inspired by X-Com, but few reach the beauty the original was at its time.
XCOM:EU showed that there is a market for turn based tactical games on all platforms, so people are now trying to make the next big thing.
Or, maybe not the next big thing (tm), but something strategic that actually has the depth the original had :p

I mean, a lot of games have the complexity xcom had, but none of the depth (which just makes it annoying). And a lot of games have strategic-ish gameplay, but not the meaningful strategic choices in the short and long term. Xcom was, and is, after all, one of the very best turn-based strategy games made. Because of the way you have a lot of strategic choices to make, but where they also matter. Rather than essentially amounting to "which is the bigger gun, and which direction do I point it next". Lot of things could be improved on to make it easier to play, obviously. But the variables affecting where the aliens will take an interest next, what missions they go for (that then can clue you in on what is going on when you decipher their communications and interrogate their crews, and so on). And how elegant in many ways the play on the actual maps were.. It's very difficult to play firaxis Xcom for me now, because there's so many things missing. Like going from New Vegas to Fallout 3, for example. And then playing the first two afterwards again :D

Chaos Reborn is on GOG and X-Com itself is clearly popular, so I see no reason why it wouldn't get on GOG if Snapshot Games requests it, though I did put up a wishlist just in case.

No problem! There's been surprisingly few sites reporting on it, despite how much press the Firaxis Xcoms get, so I imagined there'd be quite a few people not aware of this yet.

Too early to tell, but it's clear that this won't be an as close to identical X-Com clone the way Xenonauts was. Rather than invading earth, these monsters come from the sea and seem to revolve more around mutations than psychic powers. There'll also be large scale units among them that can do that things like spawn more troops or provide cover with mist and which you can hit in specific areas for different effects (disabling abilities, making it go berserk) in addition to the more normal sized units.
Nothing on whether it'll have time units and usage based stat growth, though. What's most important to me is whether or not it won't have the 'trigger' of Xcom, where enemy units get to move into cover during your turn when they first notice you. That always felt like the computer was cheating me out of my reward for outmaneuvering it.

There's also that this isn't just any X-Com style game, but a Julian Gollop led spiritual successor. The same guy who led the development team of the original.
Now that role role usually gets pretty overrated, but Gollop being involved is at least a good indicator that we'll get some good tactical mechanics.
Oh My Mother Mary!!! (No offence intended towards those of a religious persuasion)

I can't take this gaming goodness overload...

Firstly, Black Room by Mr Romero et al..
Then this by Mr Gollop

If I wasn't so old I would have suffered a premature ejaculation.
I hope this one will be the game Apocalypse was supposed to be.

That game made me feel that a very good design was there, but the publisher messed. The real time was unnecessary, all my units looked the same and the user interface could be better.

If it was allowed a little more time to mature, it would have been better. As it stands, it is a bit confusing.

Gede: The real time was unnecessary
I actually enjoyed the game a great deal more in RTwP mode than in TB mode. Actually, it's the game which got me into RTwP combat big time in the first place.

If I recall correctly, it was playable, but I did not felt that it allowed a more in-depth tactical approach. I ended up positioning my troops, and waited for the aliens to come to me. Those creatures that reminded me of Face Huggers were a pest, and my crew did not prioritise their targets correctly. I could not keep my men spread out since it was difficult to keep two active fronts.

At the same time, I felt that the maps could be quite large for me to micro-manage in turn-based.

I never got anywhere near completing the game. It used to run very well under DOSbox on my EEE PC. Master of Magic, an older game, did not.

That's why I'm hoping they'll get to take their time this time around. It's unclear whether they're self-funding it, are planning a kickstarter or have a publisher, but I'm hoping it's the second as that would give them plenty of funds and allow them to maintain control of the IP.

In the meantime, openapoc should turn Apocalypse into the game it was always meant to be.

I hope so too.
As for openapoc... is that a thing yet?
Maybe in 3 years they will have it running.
Maybe after I finish openXCOM they'll have the Terror from the Deep done. And after I finish that one, openapoc playable. So, things are looking good, and Gallop will have a lot of time to finish his game. :-)

Not yet in the sense that you can play it, but it's on its way. You can already play TFTD wih the nightlies, though. It's not as stable as the next milestone will be, but it's more than playable.
