Hi guys, this has been driving me crazy and I hope someone can help me.

So I used to have a game, I bought it somewhere around 2003-2004ish, but it could be as late as 2006. I got it in the $5 bin at Walmart, so whatever it was had been out a little while and was successful enough to be distributed to Walmart. It was on 1 cd, I think, def not more than 2.

It was a FPS or possibly 3rd person shooter set in something that looked alot like WW1. I think the names of the countries were different though, so maybe it was on an alien world with a similar development or maybe it was alt history. It was just people shooting people though, no aliens or demons or whatever (that i saw).

I bought the game, installed it, watched the opening cinematic which was of a group of soldiers going over the top of a trench system and charging the opposite trenches, only to be cut down by machine gun fire. The graphics were sort of cartoony, not funny cartoony but not photo realistic or anything like that. I remember the cinematic being sort of brutal, like you would go "wow ok" while you were watching everyone get shot to pieces.

After the cinematic ended, i remember it being a fairly decent shooter but the main thing that sticks in my head is the cinematic. So far the closest thing I've found is "Iron Storm", but its not that. It has the flavor of the first Dawn of War trailer, sort of, but its not a Warhammer game either. I do not remember anything flying or tanks or anything like that, although there might have been some in the later levels bc I never finished the game.

My impression, athough I couldn't swear to it, is that the cinematic was kind of sepia colored, sort of browned out, like the Dawn of War trailer kind of is.

I have looked all over the place, including reddit, and I have had no luck. This seriously is driving me crazy, but I know someone here has to know the game I'm talking about. Please help.

Thanks!

Hello Jason. I know you have ruled out Iron Storm, but your description of the cinematic (sepia-coloured and soldiers gunned down by machinegun fire) fits that of its alternative edition, World War Zero: Iron Storm:

Hi Grargar,

Thank you very much for the reply but unfortunately I am sure that is not the game. The cinematic was longer and more brutal, if that makes any sense at all, plus I don't think (but i'm not sure) that it had a voice-over.

The game I have in mind seems very similar to Iron Storm though, I tried checking games by the same studio and googling "games similar to Iron Storm" but I didn't have any luck.
It has undead, but maybe it was Necrovision? I don't think you encounter the undead right away, so you may not remember them. I took a look at the opening cinematic and it looks fairly close to what you describe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tYqi6wBup_U

Its' here on GOG too, but the game's from 2009 though.

Unfortunately, no one seems to remember Iron Storm.

I looked at the trailers for both necrovisions (which I own) and its not them. that's a good guess though and its certainly in that same vein
I encourage you to keep looking, but I suspect the answer is Iron Storm.

Memory is... tricky, and will sometimes merge memories together or not keep bits. For instance, I was watching Star Trek, in this case I, Mudd, and I remembered the end, but not as it was. In my memory, Norman the robot was a stationary computer, with blinking lights and whatnot. Before I saw that final scene, I was sure I'd not seen that episode before. But I had, and not hideously long ago either, maybe a couple years. Memory is a tricky thing. Memory isn't a computer, it's an overworked librarian who sometimes misfiles stuff.

Edit: There is Codename: Eagle. Its intro isn't what you described, but it is an alt-history WW1 shooter from 1999.

The only WWI games I can think of from that period are Iron Storm and Necrovision. It's interesting that so few games have used that as a setting.

There is also History Line 1914-1918 and Battlefield 1, but that's pretty much it AFAIK.

Same goes for the Vietnam war.
low rated
At any time while playing did you start screaming, puck up the computer and throw it against the wall?

If the answer is 'Yes' then it was Iron Storm.

Your description reminds me of the the original Killzone, except that's not really World War One-ish (though it does have more than a bit of a World War Two "Nazis in space" vibe). Also, I'm pretty sure the whole series is console-exclusive.

yes, the vibe reminded me alot of Quake 4 too. but its not that either
The only game I can think of besides Iron Storm is this:

Medal of Honor Allied Assault

Here's the intro (no trenches, but soldiers are behind shields and mowed down by gunfire)

thank you very much for the suggestion but no, that's not it
It's a little newer and I wouldn't call the trailer brutal but it sounds a little like Valkyria Chronicles.
