not really true though. its more a case of english getting bummed into submission by other languages (ie french), then forgetting where it lives (ie scandanavia) before rolling over and asking for a second helping. its a bit like a cat with a dose of "mr. tumnus" syndrome really.

Bah! Just pick a gender by which to a refer to a person, and stick with it. Even after that person and many people who know the person have told you repeatedly that the person's actual gender is the opposite of what you call them, just keep on using the pronoun you picked. Even if the person gets in your face and says, "Look, I'm not a woman, I don't look or dress like a woman, I'm not 'male-who-identifies-as-female'. STOP REFERRING TO ME AS 'SHE'!" -- just stick with whatever gender you arbitrarily called them in the first place. It will make you seem decisive!

Well, that's basically what it's saying. English is a bizarre mishmash of other languages, including Latin, German, and French, molded into some weird byproduct where the sentence "Will Will Smith smith? Will Smith will smith" makes sense.
As hard as it is, it's worth mentioning that it can be eventually figured out through thorough thought, though.

doesnt include much german actually - common misonception. its scandic based (so has a greater connection to slavic historically) - though of course theres the misconception scndanavian languages are somehow "germanic", rather than the other way around.

(note, I'm a former archaologist and had to learn all about this).
