Some funny people in here. Dark Souls, Diablo, Deus Ex should have flopped? Yeah sure, go back to Super Mario Galaxy or Pokemon and stay in your toddlers group, okay.

timppu: Same here, but for me the problem is a definition of "flop". I usually take it to mean that something is expected to do great, but it fails miserably to meet the expectations. Were there high expections and lots of pre-hype for e.g. Gothic that was mentioned in the OP? I guess No Man's Sky could be considered a flop. I have no idea how much money it has made, but at least it got lots of bad press.

Also, I am unsure how much money many legendary games made, were they successful or not (in the publisher's mind)? Like System Shock 2, I don't recall for sure if it did ok or miserably. Did it flop?
SS2 didn't do particularly well, as I recall (the first one certainly didn't do well). It might be instructive to consider Bioshock's reception - it sold very well and the broader audience that passed over the System Shock games assumed that what Bioshock did was fresh and new instead of being a streamlined retread.

I think Deus Ex did "meh" business, as well - that one was a grower after I think a lot of the major review sites hit it with the dreaded 7/10 scores. Planescape Torment didn't do so hot, either, I think...

ignisferroque: The Sims:
Taking the most annoying things about real life... and make a game out of it to fill that spare time? So boring ;)

Crosmando: The Sims is a game made for women. Just like boys like playing soldier and killing things, women like controlling and manipulating people.
Uh, I know plenty of men who are into controlling and manipulating people.
Your Sexism is showing.
Sadly, "issues" with women seems to be very common among gamers.

Acriz: And this summarizes the whole thread. A bunch of people complaining why they don't like certain games. Making your own taste the measurement for all people is already pretty shit, but the complete lack of understanding of why someone might like a game only shows your lack of analytical capabilities.

CharlesGrey: And as if it isn't enough to hate a video game ( how the heck can you even "hate" a video game? ... first world problems much? ), they apparently consider their own preferences of such importance, that they think no one else should have enjoyed those games either, and it would have been preferable for the studios behind those games to go bankrupt, and everyone involved should have lost their job. Never mind that most of the games and series mentioned here are actually hugely successful, highly rated and loved by many.

Welcome to the GOG Twilight Zone!
I strongly suspect a certain amount of "Look at me hating on a very popular and generally liked game! THis proves how daring, edgy, and anti establishment I am!" going on here.

This is why in my Thread about games that flopped, I wanted to concentrate on the business angle, not if individuals thought the game was good or not..to keep it from turning into a "Games I Hate" thread.

"Dark Souls" is not for everybody;it can be an incredibly frustrating game...I gave up on it, I was just dying too much for it to be fun...but many people loved it and I would not deny anybody their enjoyment just because I did not share it. I hate onions and allways order mine without, but would not keep others from heaping their burgers with onions if that is what they likel. No skin off my nose.

All 3 were not exactly flops, but did not do the business they were expected to do. But they found enough of an audience to survive, and became classics. That is not unusual.
I can't really think of a successful game apart from Goat Simulator that I actually wish would have flopped, so instead my list will consist of games I thought would flop, for the given reasons.

Shadow of Mordor

The combat mechanics were fun and the game offered plenty of lore, thus I can understand people really liking the game based of these two things.

However I just can't get over the fact that almost everything in the game looks the same, it's all very bland in terms of map- and world design. So visually it's a rather boring-looking game. The Nemesis system was a cool idea, but I don't think it manifested itself in a particuarily useful and interesting way come the end-game.

Dark Souls

Based on its rough production quality - with inconsistent hitboxes, invincibility frames, bad camera angles and glitchyness - I did think the game would flop. Yet, while these are crucial issues in other games, people seem to have "forgotten" about them in this case, in favor of more positive things.

Witcher 3

I did think the "Europeanness" of the game would be detrimental to its success, especially in the US and UK markets.
I very much dreaded the GameSpot/IGN/GiantBomb/Mainstream reviews. Cool I was wrong.

Dying Light

I really though people, well ... the mainstream masses, would be done and over with zombie games, yet the game seems to have done quite well for itself.

Doom (2016)

I thought the "simplicity" and single-player focus of the game would be its donwfall. I thought people of today only wanted "smart/deep" and multiplayer-focused FPS games.

Bloodborne

'Yes' I thought this would flop, how could it live up to the frantic fanaticism that surrounds the Dark Souls games ? offer something similar yet still different enough to be its own thing. I really didn't expect people to respond so positively to it.

Fairfox: Did Rise of teh Robots flop?
Not commercially. Unthessurftlee "Rise of teh Robots" 2 flopped, while actually being a game.

dudalb: SPORE did not exactly flop, but it did not sell nearly as well as expected, EA and Maxis were expecting Sim City and The Sims sale figures, and it did not happen.
Might have been the thousands (!) of "one star reviews" back then because of "online activation".

Nowadays PC-Gaming == Steam, at least for many people (not here of course...)

ignisferroque: Minecraft:
Dont really see why people waste hundreds of hours building something ugly out of square blocks. Get Blender, its free and produces something actually aesthetically pleasing, probably in a smaller amount of time ;)
This!
All of them. Buying games is like giving the IS money and eating breakfast with Lucifer. As someone said in this thread, if you're playing Sims as a man your dick will fall off. It's bad role models all around, for example when you plant tree in bowels of a living woman like in Deadly Premonition you get arrested! Plus bored like also someone said in this thread. All people playing games should be arrested for loitering.
I would say Goat Simulator. Maybe I'm just dense, but I don't understand the appeal of that game at all.
Genital Jousting. I was amazed people were actually playing that.
