DadJoke007: I would be more than happy to pay money for good gaming journalism that I can read offline, but I might be in the margins on that one. There's nothing more relaxing than to read magazines dedicated to your favorite hobbies.

teceem: I still think nothing ever replaced the PC Gamer UK magazines from the 90s. Next best thing (for me) is Gametrailers (RIP) and IGN video reviews (but still, not nearly as good).

I don't mean to be sexist about it, but the IGN female video reviewers are worse than their male counterparts (not always, just in general - the ones I've "seen").
Holy fudge how I loved old PC Gamer, I read that magazine until the mid '10s. It was always good, but it was pure gold during the '90s.

I used to enjoy Gamespot and Gametrailers as well.

It was ok during the first part of the 2000s, but too many articles about online (competitive) games started filling it. Less and less great humour too...

Found out the gamestop/EBGames here in Canada are a separate entity, If gamestop dies we still have it here like toysRus is still open here. Crazy but wondering if they can get out of that mess and rebuild up to something different or something?

ChrisGamer300: Great news, can't wait until they are all gone or most of them anyway and maybe now they can go and be productive in another profession instead of being utterly useless at being informative of the games they are supposed to review in a neutral way without inserting their bullshit into every one of them.

paladin181: Yup.always great news when people lose their jobs.

Jesus Christ the level of insensitivity here is astounding.i hope all you celebrating are laid off from your job tomorrow.
The irrationality of some people is amazing.

timppu: I first thought this is about GameSpot, but apparently not. Good, because I wouldn't want to see anything bad happen to www.gamefaqs.com, which seems to be nowadays part of GameSpot.

I don't even know what GameStop is, unless it is that chain of video game stores? I tried to go to www.gamestop.com, but I get an "Access Denied" error. Their website is down, or what?
It's an american game store chain that bought up every other competitor they could and are now falling apart, similar to how Blockbuster bought out a bunch of video stores in the US as well and failed over time due to not adapting to change and other bad practices.

paladin181: And there is a difference to being indifferent and openly celebrating.

Being sympathetic doesn't help perhaps, being a dick doesn't solve anything either.
True, but it depends on the job and who is seeing it happen....if it were the meat industry losing jobs it would make vegans happy....same here with how some view the journalism and ethics of some game informer staff.

Yes it is uncalled for to be a d*ck, but it ALSO doesn't worsen the situation of those who got fired(usually), and for some it is a bit understandable(to "celebrate" such) if a bit rude.

Crosmando: Gaming "journalists" are some of the worse scumbags around so I can't say I'm very sad, they insert their politics into reviews, they have very poor skills in general and blame the game's design when it's they who are at fault, they don't research before reviewing games, etc etc. Good riddance.
While I don't want people to be fired, I must also point out the whole GG thing and how some reviewers were getting paid(money and stuff) by devs to push some games or give them better scores as well.

Remember the free demo cds? Those were always fun.

Maybe it can be like the one Blockbuster we still have that avoided the business folding. :)

Update(sorta fresh): Gamestop had to recently start closing a few hundred stores. I wonder if they will last or go the way of Blockbuster? :\

Not tomorrow, but yes it's inevitable. Recently read an article about how 70% of Borderlands 3's console sales were digital.

With all the controversy(or nontroversy as some call it) surrounding that game, many might not have wnated to buy that game and support the devs for whatever reason.

You are likely right about GS, though. With eBay/Amazon/etc selling used copies of games and GS itself having a digital storefront to sell such they are very behind in the digital games market beyond their aforementioned online storefront for some physical games.

I remember fondly when they sold PC games(used) for cheap that people traded in(until devs complained about it), and older console games through their brick and mortar stores. Now they sell cute but overpriced merch and mostly newer titles only.

Guess they should learn to code.

TBH I am sad to hear some had to lose their jobs, but GS should really learn to diversify at this point.

Personal GS update:

I went to a local GS and noticed they realllly seem to want to lose money. They took what used to be 2 decent sized sections/rows(15 or so feet wide and around 6 feet tall, double sided) which housed most of their 360/PS3 games(and the bargain bins that also sold cheaper games for such systems), and they ditched them for more gimmicky plastic toys and shirts/hats/etc.

They now have small 2 feet wide, 8 feet tall wall sections, one for each system(360/ps3), and most space is either for merch or the latest systems only. :\

(I haven't checked into their other stores nearby but I expect they likely did the same)

Haven't they learned from the whole fiasco from when they dropped used PC games and other older console games? Or from when blockbuster folded up from poor choices?

The stores near me are now offering "new" level to their rewards program/cards....for a set extra fee you can now get a few $5 certificates/etc per year and some other stuff.....I guess they are getting a tad desperate.

They also keep adding more plastic cr*p I could buy at other stores or online, and less games(mostly the newest and most popular games are kept on the shelves they have left.

At this point they should re-brand as KS(KitschStop).

You have got it backwards. They aren't going to lose money because they stopped selling old and used games. They stopped selling old and used games because they lost them money. Fewer and fewer people are buying those games in actual brick and mortar stores.

Of course, selling toys and merchandise instead isn't going to save them either. People buy those online too. GameStop and Game Informer are going the way of the dodo, but that has nothing to do with 'inserting bias into reviews instead of just discussing graphics!"

Sometimes I feel the more vocal gog forumer base don't realise what a niche market they are.

Eh, I and others bought them, as it was easier than waiting for online orders and you could inspect the merch before buying.

Also they don't make much more on that plastic cr*p...it sits there most times until they throw it in the discount bins.

I agree to some extent, unless they find a way to revitalize the brand...perhaps they could do something as shocking as, I dunno, selling OLD GAMES to people who don't want to have to wait for online orders. ;)

It's still a lucrative niche else gog wouldn't be doing it, and steam wouldn't be doing it either.
