DOSBox also emulates CPU:286/386 realmode/protected mode, Directory FileSystem/XMS/EMS, Tandy/Hercules/CGA/EGA/VGA/VESA graphics, a SoundBlaster/Gravis Ultra Sound card for excellent sound compatibility with older games...

teceem: System Shock runs slow because DOSbox emulates a relatively slow CPU... NOT because a modern CPU can't handle the emulation.
DOSBox with an Core i5 4.0 GHz Host CPU, could emulate an Pentium III 500 MHz.

The protected mode was introduced since 286, not means DOSBox can only emulate a 286/386 machine.
It will become slower in an ARM CPU, but performance is not a big problem.

That makes more sense! :-D (a 386 would be the bare minimum for SS1)
So any PC with at least a Pentium III can run the original SS1 in Dosbox (well). For 1280 resolution - a C2D should be able to do it?
