That and we probably have less than 50 regulars in main forum.
We used to have more regulars, but now we don't. Wonder why that is? It's like a mystery!

Did they happen to perish, not to be replaced?

People die you know?

Most of them were probably elderly people over the hill. Their grandchildren didn't come here, they are on TikTok and playing Roblox online.

Honestly, forums have been a lot more civil and discussions more productive without them here. Some of them went in here with ill intent.

As for the topic, I'd say an alternative of publicly available group chats for niche topics because the subforums don't drive enough traffic. Kinda similar to Discord/Teams for casual conversations. The issue would be bots, spammers, bad actors /moderation, though.
What would anyone here need "special interest groups" for?

Simply create a thread with the topic that you want to talk about.

In some sense, GD is already full of "groups" (e.g.: all the "forum game" - threads...essentially groups for like-minded people).

Very recently another "Which indie games do you want to see released on GOG in XXXX?" thread got created -> special interest group.

All the giveaway threads -> special interest groups.
Feels like a bit of a waste of resources - seems to be more often than not I visit a specific game forum only to see the "Sniff sniff" message.

I would like to see Mixes come back though, they were genuinely usefu as I recalll, while whatever algorithms drive the current recommendations seem flawed as they show things I'm not overly interested in.

That's a good question. Now I wonder: can one die of internet boredom?

Besides the flood spammers and a few obvious griefers, the rest was just people being people.
Sadly some can't handle that due to internet/social media 2.0 creating so many "safe spaces", so here we are.

"Hi, I love X game/sale!" "Wow, I also love x game/sale!" "How was your day?" "Mine was fine"
Soothing and ok in small bursts, but easily boring if it comprises the majority of a forum.

Doubtful under the current GOG leadership. They can't even be arsed to create user specific torrents for downloading purchased gamers. They shill GOG Galaxy as the best way.

Low prices alone won't save GOG in the end.

It's really telling when you have to go to a STEAM game specific forum (each game has its own forum imagine that) to get answers to questions for games you bought on GOG.

It would help if threads were moved to the proper subforums. Also due to the "choice forum oversight" (autism) there aren't enough active users left who are willing to bother attempting to build and maintain a decent knowledge base of threads.

So true. I proposed moving things into subforums over 7 years ago and I got deer in headlights reactions.

It's either that or a form letter reply. That's about all gog knows how to do.

Unless this is someone's alt, you should check out some of the legendary threads on here like the time GOG last changed its user agreement and all hell broke loose with some nutjobs citing a violation of their 1st amendments even though nothing effectively changed - https://www.gog.com/forum/general/updated_gog_user_agreement_and_other_terms/page1

I think they went full read-only mode on us and are waiting for the perfect forum topic to drop the f-bomb :D Cheers
