You don't have to update to Win10.
Although MS will probably really screw us around when it gets close to 2020, when Win7 is no longer supported.
They really do not want another XP situation, which Win7 is fast becoming.
I'm glad to be back on 7.
For gaming, I don't need the minor additions to DX12
Sure, with Win7 I have to add "WizMouse" for mouse-over window pane scrolling and Dual Monitor "TaskBar" (self explanatory) but, hey, I have a normal calculator and MS doesn't get to have my Sticky Notes up in their cloud!
Such functions have been in many Linux distros before Win7 was released, although MS only began implementing them in its post-Win7 OSes.
I also always add "Everything" search to my Win machines, because I want my local search results complete and instantaneous.
Win7 is faster and has more complete admin control using only standard interfaces.
The "Hybrid-Sleep" fake shutdown cheat of WIn10 makes folk believe it is faster.
- First impressions last.
In terms of tracking, it also means there is an unbroken data stream between Win10 sessions = not good.
Sure, Win10 is optimised for certain HWs, but, in my case, Win7 boots one second quicker from cold to a fully functional desktop - 17secs - and I have mid-range HW.
I want nothing of any cloud or permanent data streaming up and down the pipes, just so MS can serve their Swiss masters.
You have to watch out with Win7 of late, as they're trying to sneak Win10 tracking and planned obsolescence crap into it - barring some new CPUs from being used with it, even though they will.
It used to be that they would leave these as optional and unticked; now, they tick them and have really ambiguous/vague explanations as to what they're for.
You really need a hardcore firewall with whitelist deleted (don't trust any IT corps nowadays!) and set so there is no automatic answering of queries, so you get to police the entire system and catch it all.
It's not too much of a pain after the initial slew of permissions pop up.
I've failed to spot a couple of their dodgy updates, but my set up has caught them for me.
I've caught nVIDIA at it too, even with all the crap stripped out except driver and PhysX.
They tried binding some online syncing to their control panel which, under certain blocking circumstances, would punish you by not allowing access to it if you didn't allow it online.
I have the majority of updates installed.
They're mostly fine and do fix issues - except .NET, which breaks things by nature!
As well as the covert attempts via WU, I also avoid the "Malicious Software Tool" and, when I check a lot of optional updates, I find they are for dangerous Remote operations and "Customer Experience Improvement Program" - which I shouldn't be offered; though MS has tried making excuses about this anomaly.
They've still currently buggered up my wifi though.
They tried installing the dangerous Win10 (use this machine as a) hotspot thing onto my machine.
Have a check under Administrative Tools -> Task Scheduler and you will find a lot of stuff scheduled to run that you might not be amused to find.
ps.
I got perma-banned from another forum (by a dodgy Aussie SJW infiltrator) for stating almost exactly the same things.
He tried to provoke me into a fight by publicly mocking me, in order that I would retaliate and give him a seemingly valid excuse to do so.
I wasn't falling for it.
Instead, I informed him immediately that I'd reported him for attempting to start a flame war.
He instantly banned me, less than two minutes after I posted.
Reason: "being a dick".
