Themken: I use whatever liquid but NEVER EVER ready made mixes like Ne****ck or O'**y.

Stir cocoa powder and sugar/honey/other sweetener and some fat, if needed (if none in liquid) with some liquid, usually water at this point, bring to boil in the microwave oven and pour cold liquids on top and stir till all dissolved. Back in the microwave if warmer wanted but myself I never drink anything piping hot.

Oatmilk works, at least the one called 'barista' or some such, marked as suitable for adding to coffee.

Almond milk is yummy but expensive but then with the asking price for milk here it is not that much more.

A little coffee in chocolate is good, same with a little chocolate in coffee but half and half does not work in my opinion.

Alcohol... only a tiny amount if any. Of course, you may think the only way to make chocolate drinkable is by adding ten parts gin to each part chocolate...

ADD: Oh, I forgot: Vanilla... a tiny pinch of my self made vanilla sugar (tiny bits of real vanilla in powdered sugar where it has been for weeks) may go in but never that foul white chemical they sell in the shops.
I haven't tried hot chocolate from scratch before, I'm curious how it is compared to the powdered mix. Ty for the recipe.

What do you think of putting crushed candy cane to add a kind of peppermint flavour? Apologies if pop rocks are already peppermint flavoured, I haven't had them before.
If you make hot chocolate in the microwave oven, you need to watch it constantly as it is only two seconds from starting to boil until boiled over the brim and is flowing everywhere if you use milk.

Pop rocks have a variety of flavours like Strawberry, grape, orange, root beer, etc. I don't think there is a peppermint flavour. Does sound good, you just wouldn't get the popping from the carbonation.
1) Milk. Water is just sad.

I am trending towards leaving cow's milk behind, but overall our house is centrally a 2%; I'm fine with plant milk, coconut milk, and folded protein milk.

2) Maybe cinnamon if I'm feeling adventurous, or a swizzle of vanilla extract, but otherwise, no toppings.

3) I don't use mixes.
See, I'm old fashioned, and generally old. I use the hard method of mixing sweetener with chocolate powder, making the simple syrup or melting it together and then stir it up. This also allows me to portion EXACTLY.

Microwaving is seen as slightly savage, but not as savage as microwaving tea. Kettles (stovetop and otherwise) along with pots exist for a reason!

As someone from the city Willy Wonka resides in I'd like to point out that hot chocolate and a cup of cocoa are two different things.
Hot chocolate is made by melting chocolate into a good amount of milk to make a chocolate and dairy based hot drink.
A cup of cocoa is similar but using cocoa powder (and usually sugar or honey etc) but it does not actually involve chocolate.
Edit: Cocoa may also use water or other liquids instead of dairy.

It doesnt have to be though - you CAN add a sugar type. :)

Edit: I've a friend who worked in michelin star restaurants and one place he worked they used green ginger wine and brandy as the liquid base - later mixing in cream when the booze itself had evapourated. it was pretty damned good too!

...this is the Hot Chocolate discussion, right?
FYI people, the milk made from almonds is REALLY BAD for the environment because it takes an average of 2L of water PER NUT to reach harvest. Practically any other milk substitute is a better choice.

I use plain, garden-variety normal bovine milk; I make a mocha with coffee (just instant) and add cinnamon and honey, rather than sugar. And microwave it. (But don't re-heat it or it will degrade pretty quickly into an undrinkable mess.)

Well, I made some stovetop earlier, and I'd post a picture, but until GOG improves the situation of allowing pictures larger than a pathetic 500kb, I cannot, and will not bother to post it. I garnished it with a raspberry, no less.
Pretty good band, my parents used to listen to them all the time.
