They're not on GOG and probably never will be, but Portal and Portal 2.
My recommendations. I have played and finished all of them (in some cases, several times):

Commandos 2
Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics
XWing Alliance (imho Tie Fighter is better, but I suppose you have played it already)
Thief series (1, 2 and 3)
Freedom Force series

heartburnron: Hoping you guys can give me a steer towards some forgotton classics. Thanks in advance.

GR00T: Not forgotten classics, but if you're looking for an 'old school' (god, that term's overused, but it fits here) type of game, check out the Eschalon series. I quite liked them.

A few more to consider:

Arcanum
Banner Saga series
Expeditions:Conquistador
Jade Empire
Pillars of Eternity
Risen series
Wasteland 2

I'll add another vote for Trine as well (and I'm among those that don't care for platformers).
Thanks for those. I actually have access to Jade Empire and The Banner Saga series through my Origin Access subscription but never paid them much attention so thanks I'll have to get round to them. I've hovered over the purchase button a few times on the Risen series - yet to pull the trigger on as of yet...

Just noticed that Trine 2 is available on Origin Access too - would I have a lesser experience if I skipped the first one and went straight in to this one? It looks awesome.

heartburnron: I've done a lot of research into click and point adventure games and have bought 20+ to get through so I probably have the best of those and likley don't need any more recommendations just now. .
avatar
supplementscene: You're well stocked but this is my genre and if you tell me which of these you have I'll let you know if there's anything I prefered
Ok thanks, here goes:

Fran Bow (completed and was my first point & click adventure game - one of my favourite games ever - that soundtrack - wow!)
The Book of Unwritten Tales (playing just now - almost at the end)
Grim Fandango HD Remaster
Her story (ok maybe not quite point & click - completed anyway)
Primordia
The Blackwell Legacy
Blackwell Convergence
Blackwell Legacy
Blackwell Unbound
The Cat Lady
Sunset's ashes
Swordbreaker The Game
Syberia
Syberia 2

Ok so I over estimated a bit with 20+ but given I only play one of these types of games at any one time it's going to take me a bit of time to get through them. I'd welcome your opinion as to which of these games I should start next once I've finished Unwritten tales though...

Honestly, Trine 1 is simply better.

THIS.

I don't think you'd be missing much in terms of story, Trine is pretty light on story anyhow, and 2 is better than the first one, so I don't think there's any problem with starting with the sequel.

I don't see any games from Daedalic on your list, that's a shame. They are definately the best point & click developer around. Chains of Satinav and Memoria are simply superb, and in terms of comedy p&c the Deponia series is about as good as it gets.

Misanthropic: Notes about this list:
~ I HATE Point & Clicks... I love Deus Ex, Mass Effect 1 and 2, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, the System Shock series, VtM: Bloodlines, and the Witcher series. That should give you a better idea of my taste and how it may, or may not, line up with your own.
~ I've tried to limit myself to games released from autumn of '97 through 2012.
~ While some of the games listed may have had an earlier release, most dates refer to the North 'Murica! PC release.
~ I've limited myself to games available on PC, (you didn't specify, but I assume that's what you're looking for)
~ These are my top picks. Not just games that I simply like or just enjoy, but games that I love, or games that stood out to me for one reason or another. These are games that I've played through more than once, and likely will play through again at some point.
~ If you're on Windows 10, it'll be an extra huddle in running some of these titles.
~ I have used tildes. Because Tildes > Hyphens. (Suck it hyphens)

The List:
American McGee's Alice ~ (2000. There's a 'Complete Collection' that bundles this with the sequel)
Alice: Madness Returns ~ (2011)

BulletStorm ~ (2011. GearBox recently released a "remastered" version, but the changes aren't significant at all, and they most certainly do not warrant the ridiculous price Gb is demanding... The game also ends unresolved)

Deus Ex: Human Revolution ~ (2011. Yes, there's the 'Director's Cut' released in 2013, but everything I've read says that version's a mess on PC)

Diablo Battle Chest ~ (2001. This is honestly the version I'd get, specifically the original version of the Battle Chest with the first Diablo still included. However, the real meat of this recommendation would probably be Diablo II and its expansion, both of which are otherwise available digitally through Blizzard)

https://www.gog.com/game/the_elder_scrolls_iii_morrowind_goty_edition ~ (2003. Best... Game... Ever...)

Fable: The Lost Chapters ~ (2005. I honestly prefer this version to the 'Anniversary' remake. The more "realistic" character models in Anni look creepy as hell IMO)

Halo: Combat Evolved ~ (2003)
Halo 2 ~ (2007. This is kind of a crapshoot. The game is supposed to be Vista exclusive, but it is entirely possible to install and run it on XP and 7. You have to jump through some hoops, but it's doable. Also, the game itself ends on a massive cliffhanger)

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain ~ (Summer of 1997. Hard to find and expensive)
https://www.gog.com/game/legacy_of_kain_soul_reaver ~ (1999)
https://www.gog.com/game/legacy_of_kain_soul_reaver_2 ~ (2001)
https://www.gog.com/game/legacy_of_kain_defiance ~ (2003)

Max Payne ~ (2001)

https://www.gog.com/game/mirrors_edge ~ (2009)

https://www.gog.com/game/the_penumbra_collection ~ (2007)

Silent Hill 2 ~ (2002. Hard to find and expensive. On the off chance you have the option and think "I'll just get the 'Silent Hill HD Collection', DONT. It's buggy, runs poorly, and is visually borked)

StarCraft ~ (1998. I know you said no Strategy games, but give it a chance, it's still the best of its kind and it's free. https://us.battle.net/shop/en/product/starcraft )

https://www.gog.com/game/tomb_raider_the_last_revelation_chronicles ~ (1999. Purely for The Last Revelation, which is the best game in the franchise)
Tomb Raider: Underworld. ~ (2008)

https://www.gog.com/game/turok_2_seeds_of_evil ~ (1999)

https://www.gog.com/game/worms_armageddon ~ (1999)
Thanks for taking the time to post all this information, much appreciated. I'm a big fan of the Tomb Raider games and I think I've played them all expect for The Last Revelation so I'll look out for that.

I've completed Human Revolution - it was the Directors cut but can't say I noticed any issues...

I'm a huge horror game fan and would love to play the Silent Hill games but have been unable to find them - I read the HD collection was botched so have left it alone up to now. Is it really that bad?

Never played the Max Payne games although I have 3 wish-listed on Steam - I take it the earlier ones are better then?

Ok thanks I'll look out for those ones going forward.

Guys - I just wanted to say thanks very much for all the suggestions and apologies to anyone I may have missed and not responded to or thanked directly. I really appreciate the obvious time and thought you have all put into your suggestions. It's apparent that this is cracking little community you have got going here. Thanks very much and I look forward to sharing my gaming experiences with you going forward. Cheers!!

The third one was made by different developers, adn as far as I know doesn't really have much to do with the previous ones. I never felt inclined to play it. It looked like a much more standard Rockstar gangster shooter, than the moody, unique thing the series started as. And it just felt all kinds of wrong to contiune the series without the original devs. I'm sure the first two games are no longer as impressive as they were back then, but I think they still hold up. As fun as the gameplay is, their main strenght were always story, mood and unique storytelling. The sequel is actually probably even better when it comes to clever storytelling, but I like the story and the characters in the first one best. That said, you have to like noir and neo-noir type stories and style. If you don't, or heaven forbid strongly dislike it, you won't like Max Payne.

I played Silent Hill 2 and 3 (Muchly recommended) HD collection. I didn't have any significant problems, other than a bit of framerate slowdown in SH3 when I fired the submachine gun. I thought it was worth it to play them with higher resolution personally.

I liked Max Payne 3 better than the first two, one of my top 5 games ever. Some people will disagree, the first two are made by Remedy, the third is a Rockstar game, and I like Rockstar very much.

Been having a look and it seems you can't buy the HD collection either for PC. The only way to get these games it seems is to pay £30 for a second hand CD or £40 - £80 for a new one! I take it the only Silent Hill game on Steam, Silent Hill Homecoming, isn't going to give me a taste of what these games were like?
shantae series on gog is amazing same with the shovel knight games.

Stalker from shadow of Chernobyl to call of pripyat are amazing but skip clear sky

crysis 1 is an insane game with many ways to play with styles like sneaking or guns blazing with still till today outstanding graphics.

these are pretty fun to start off with and QUAKE 3 AND UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3 or 2004 WHICH ARE AMAZING FUN for arena shooters! :D

After a 15 year layoff they might want to start with something a little less taxing. :P

Great game but man....HARD!!!! XD

Maybe not, Homecoming seems to have a lot of the parts of the Silent Hills in it if you really want to experience some of it, but it doesn't seem like it's a classic like the originals. Reminds me I need to finish Silent Hill 4: The Room.

heartburnron: I got the most recent Hitman game free with a graphics card last year and whilst I did enjoy the first few levels I don't really have the patience for all the strategic planning required in the game. I definitely wouldn't have described that game as atmospheric though, I take the original games feel different then?
I should have mentioned that by "Hitman series" I meant "all the Hitman games up to and including Blood Money". I haven't played Absolution or the latest (episodic?) installment.

Yeah, the first four games had amazing atmosphere and some of the best music I ever heard in games (created by composer Jesper Kyd, who quit after "Blood Money"). Actually, the stealth mechanics in the original Hitman games are not unlike the ones in The Saboteur. Wear a disguise, don't draw too much attention to yourself and you'll be fine. And even if things go bad, you can still go in guns blazing. You always have that freedom of choice. Maybe the newer Hitman games are railroaded in a way that you're forced into a slow/stealthy approach. Anyway, I never felt that the original Hitman games required much patience, they were simply fun action games.
Unless you've already played them, if possible, also check out:

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (1997)
Outlaws (1997)
Heart of Darkness (1998) (no digital re-release yet)
Nox (2000)
Severance: Blade of Darkness (2001) (removed from GOG, sadly)
Arx Fatalis (2002)
Enclave (2003)
XIII (2003) (removed from GOG as well)
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath (2005)
Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy (2005) *
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (2006)
Bioshock (2007)

* (a very promising game ruined by silly mechanics and story turns, but definitely worth a look all the same)
