Hi, I am trying to view Icewind dale 2 on a lenovo g505 laptop with AMD A6-5200 APU processor and Radeon HD8400 graphics, running Win 10 home 64 bit. The game runs but is in 4:3 format so I have black space each side on my widescreen display. I have read several forums on this issue but have not manged to solve it. The G3 widescreen mod did not work. The icewind2 config file has fullscreen=1. I do not have Catalyst Centre installed so do not have scaling options as far as I can see. Please help. I am not particularly pc savvy so please give "idiot proof" instructions.
Many thanks. Chris

If you right click on a blank part of your desktop, does it have AMD Radeon Settings?
If so, select Display and the GPU Scaling Mode in there.

olnorton: hi, if I do as suggested I can get to a tab marked "display properties" but clicking on that gives me no scale adjustment for the overall screen size just scales up the icons. I can adjust resolution but again no change from 4:3 format

Icewind Dale 2 is originally a 4:3 game (running in a 800x600 resolution), so if you see black borders on the sides on a widescreen (16:9) monitor, then you see the game correctly. If you didn't see the black side borders, then you'd be most probably looking at a distorted, vertically stretched image of the game.

There may be some fan made mods to make the game widescreen (unstretched) using 16:9 resolutions like 1280x768 or 1920x1080, I am not sure, but I am currently happily playing IWD2 as it is intended, with black borders on the sides at the original 800x600 resolution.

If I recall correctly, quite often the graphics drivers don't offer the aspect ratio options, UNLESS you are in a different (in this case 4:3) resolution.

So, first change your desktop resolution to e.g. 1024x768, and then check if you see an option in your graphics driver setting to keep (or not keep) the correct aspect ratio. Then change your desktop resolution back to whatever your display's native resolution is (quite often 1920x1080).

But as said, I think you should play the game with the black side borders because then the game is displayed correctly on your widescreen monitor. You don't want to play the game stretched, do you? Do you? Come on! Think of the children, you wouldn't stretch them too, would you?

Stetched children...hmmm.... interesting concept. But i take your point, the game is not unplayable, but I would still like to see a full screen. We have another laptop, and IWD2 is full screen on that.

Does the other laptop have a widescreen (16:9 or 16:10) display as well?

Most probably on that other laptop it is configured in the graphics driver settings that the correct aspect ratio is NOT retained if you are using another (like 4:3) aspect ratio resolution, but the image is always stretched to fill the whole screen. On your laptop, it is configured to always keep the correct aspect ratio also with 4:3 resolutions.

If you want a stretched image also on your laptop, yeah, you need to disable the correct aspect ratio from the graphics driver settings. As said, first set your desktop to some 4:3 resolution like 1024x768 in case the drivers show that aspect ratio setting only then. I recall that being the case with some drivers I used.

NOTE: I am unsure if there is some widescreen modification available for the game which would allow you to run the game in 16:9 resolutions, without stretching the image, showing more of the screen at any time.

EDIT: So did you already try e.g. this?

You can also google for icewind dale 2 widescreen

EDIT2: Ok you said that you did, "G3 mod".

If it works in D3D Window that app might make it run in a window without bars on the sides/top & bottom.
You could update your display driver and maybe get a few more options.

Hi All, thanks for your posts. I tried the G3 mod from the link provided, all it does is display the game still at 4:3 but in what appears to be a picture frame! So it is even smaller in terms of gaming area. i tried the 1024x768 resolution but it made no difference to my scaling options or to how the game was displayed. I will have a look at new drivers although last time I looked at this on the radeon site for my set up it was not listed as being for WIN 10 64 Bit only for 32Bit.

Are you sure you applied the mod correctly if you check the attached screen shot from that thread it clearly shows the game in widescreen.
