Hi guys,

I always buy games directly on GOG myself,

But today I redeemed a game that I got from someone I don't know in person as a giveaway gift (from Discord) and redeemed it on GOG, while redeeming it said "Gifted from ..." so I guess it's alright.

I have a lot of games on GOG and don't want redeeming a single game to be against GOG rules or anything.

Yes, it is. The exception may be if he bought it by money from card fraud, but GOG will just take the game from your account in this case, not ban you.

Should be legal, unless it's a laundering scheme. Are you doing someone else's dirty laundry, OP?

Thank you for info so it should be okay. I don't even know why I redeemed it, not an interesting game to me anyway (Graveyard Keeper), but was first time I won anything in giveaway :D

Haha, laundry by a single game?
I have over 317 games here and only 1 or 2 of them are redeemed. I was just worried about my large game collection.

Thanks anyway bud.
yes its alway legal for YOU to redeem codes

the other senarios are where the guy that gave\ sold you the code may not be legal but thats between Gog and them... not you

It wouldn't be wise for the OP to wash their dirty laundry in public...

But you would still have the game removed from your library (as mentioned earier) if that was found to be the case...

No it's not. I could think of a situation where it is not always legal for the code redeemer to redeem a GOG code.

For example, say the code redeemer hacked someone's else's GOG account after the owner of the account had purchased a gift code, but before the time when the account owner had distributed that gift code to its intended recipient, and then the hacker redeemed that gift code on a GOG account that they created.

That would be an example of an illegal redemption of a GOG code.

Well that escalated quickly :D

I guess I'll never redeem codes on GOG again because I can't be sure how they acquired their key (unless from close friends).

To be honest I have generalized anxiety disorder and worry about everything for hours, if I could I would just delete this stupid game from my library right now :D

Hello iBeeze,

Don't worry too much about this. Some people on these forums have too much free time and enjoy making things looking way worst than they actually are.

So for completeness, in 99,9999999% of the cases, redeeming a received key is perfectly fine. Moreover, the scenario proposed (which is close to being the only one leading to the redeemer doing an illegal act) by the previous poster is only illegal if you, as the redeemer, have hacked another account to get the key you redeemed. Anyway, the illegal part here lies way more in hacking another user account (which, for the sake of simplicity, I'll assume you did not do) to get the key and not in the redeeming.

So, long story short, you should really not worry about it. A lot of people have redeemed, from time to time, codes offered by other fellow GOGers and I'ld gladly bet that none of us has got his account banned for that.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. As long as you apply common sense to where you purchase or otherwise acquire GoG codes, especially if they are hugely discounted compared to elsewhere, then you should be fine. And remember the old adage,"If it looks too good to be true, then it probably is...".

Hello Trooper1270,

In this case, iBeeze was talking about a code received for free on Discord (similarly to the ones offered in the giveaways in the forum). So, since no money exchange is involved, there is absolutely no risk for iBeeze. Worst case scenario, the gift key was gained in a fraudulent way and that game (and that game only) will be removed from the account.

Yeah I also doubt a single key received in a giveaway is anything to worry about, I'm overreacting as always...

Thanks mate.

Yes, that is the case in regards to freely acquired GoG codes. I just thought I'd add in a warning with regards to purchased GoG codes, considering numerous other ways of acquiring codes had be mentioned (including account hacking)...

You got a point there. Thanks for the clarification.
