Here I thought they argued for something in return for having Geralt in the game, maybe even push for the DRM-free deal, but all they got was a short-term monetary gain.

No Namco on GOG and no Soul Caliber VI DRM-free. Just Geralt in Denuvo.

Uhm... no. No, it did not.

He's thinking of GTA 4.

I always get those two confused.

People always assume the "Game for Windows' Icon/name meant GFWL. It was a confusing thing, which is baffling to me.
EDIT: I still have my original game in the box, and it certainly doesn't require GFWL.

F4LL0UT: 2. It's one of those pesky DRMs that have been accused of doing a variety of shit like writing a shitload of data, thereby killing SSDs, affecting games' performance and classically leaving files behind when uninstalled.
Any links/sources for this? I'm curious.

F4LL0UT: 1. It's highly effective DRM. Initially even renowned hacker groups admitted that it could put an end to software piracy as we know it. Luckily they weren't quite right and almost all meaningful releases using Denuvo have been successfully cracked.

Edit: Ninja'd.
The point is rather how long they go uncracked. There's no one actively cracking Denuvo atm. Voksi was and he got raided and his gear taken. Jurassic World Evolution's going on 74 days uncracked, Yakuzo 0 24 days, Monster Hunter world over 2 weeks. It's a good time to be using Denuvo :)

As for the SSD thing, that was disproven long ago. There have been performance hits with games that implemented it in a bad way. Most games run fine with it though and some have been absolutely stellar games performance wise.

Probably not gonna mane any friends here by saying this but MAN am I glad that I play mostly on console these days and can enjoy these games without supporting Denuvo or worrying about that kind of stuff (and yes, I'm aware of all the other downsides of consoles and I just don't care right now).

Yeah, I suspected this, that's why I said "accused". These rumours certainly contributed to Denuvo's bad reputation, though.

And well, bad performance due to bad implementation of a certain DRM is still an argument against said DRM in my book.

Didn't know about the raid, though, and that Denuvo is going stronger again, now.

I had the original uncensored European version of Witcher 1 as published by Atari and it never required Games for Windows Live. I believe it did have some other DRM crap on it though.

No, there are also those who are just plain idiots.

There's more to it: "Anti-tampering" DRM could have a negative impact on long-term game preservation, as well as game modding. As far as I know there are also various versions of Denuvo, including some which require online activation, or others which limit the amount of installations per license. And then there are those gamers who simply don't want to support any kind of DRM measures with their hard earned cash, even if it's relatively "harmless" DRM. Just a matter of principle, and sending a message to the Devs that you'd rather see them spend their money on game development, instead of expensive DRM solutions.

These are fine, as long as they don't use that as a poor excuse to pirate it instead, which many do. It's amazing the amount of times you see "Well, since it has Denuvo I'm not going to buy it anyway so it doesn't matter if I pirate it"

Sounds to me like those would have pirated it either way, and are just looking for an excuse, as you say. If it's not DRM, they'll find something else. "Well, the game is crap anyway, I'm not going to pay for that" or "The Devs are assholes and don't deserve my money" etc.

I can only say that I don't even remember when I last "pirated" a game, but I have yet to spend money on a game with third-party DRM such as Denuvo. I do buy games on Steam, but always check whether it comes with any additional DRM or clients, before I make a purchase. Steam on its own can be enough of a pain already, so I have absolutely no need for further obstacles to keep me from enjoying the games I paid for.
