Kawaii (かわいい) in Japanese means “cute”, “lovely”, “sweet”; a term most of us are familiar with, one way or another. There’s another word though, that – while spelled and pronounced quite similarly – means something entirely different: kowai (こわい), “scary”, “dreadful”, or “eerie”.
