eksasol: If you're looking at alone and moody, you should try some hiking games, like Morrowind w/ Overhaul mod, Oblivion or Witcher 3. All good for that purpose, don't have to do the main quest, just explore around. I think The Long Dark may work too, but I haven't played it yet.

I still think No Man's Sky is the best choice, for this purpose. Alternatively, I heard good things about Empyrion - Galactic Survival, but it's not on GOG. (And Steam is down).

Or Pokeman Go.

There are few sailing games I might recommend like Sea Dogs, but can't say they are not frustrating.

Just play Super Mario World.
Thanks for more ideas. I still think it's best to wait with NMS. I am sort of "patient gamer"... if you know what i mean. Elder scrolls and The Witcher - good stuff, but I am a bit afraid of big games like that. Why? Because when I start something, I usually push myself to finish it. And lately I feel better experimenting with shorter games. Anyway, I loved Morrowind when I played it - great times :-)
How about we all log into Blizzard christmas night and have full forum game of Diablo 2 using a MOD that makes Diablo look like Santa Clause.

Come to think about it, Diablo 1 is a great game with outstanding atmosphere, where I indeed felt alone in a dark and hostile world. Even NPCs in the town seemed eerie and even a bit insane, like they could not be trusted. It made it all the more lonely experience. Not to mention going underground and being completely on your own against evil lurking in the dark. I think they really nailed it.
Shame that last time I tried, it didn't work properly on Win7, something with AMD Radeon drivers. maybe they fixed it...?

Emob78: You're going to spend Christmas alone and want a moody game that makes you feel alone and like you're on an alien world? Dude, just make yourself a drink and hang out with us here on the forum. We'll help you check off every single one of those requirements.
I am not that much of a forum guy. Good to know that there are people hanging around here even during Christmas... It makes me remember how I spent one New Yea's Eve in an MMO.

Vampire the Masquerade 1 Redemption is good at that. Especially when the protagonist finds himself in the modern world/era...
