sure enough, i found myself with a craving to hunt for games with similar mechanics as Majesty, Majesty 2 but with less of a puzzle format as we know from Majesty 2. Build a magical tower to be able to withstand dragon attacks, build in specific order or restrict yourself to certain buildings, recruitment options are what i would name as ... " too puzzly " preferably created with a more strategic mindset.

i found one other, named driftland, but i'm curious to learn about other titles.

Preferably with the PC as operating point.
I've never found a good "indirect strategy" game. I couldn't even finish Majesty/2. Eventually anyway. Hopefully you (we) can get some recommendations here. I liked them for their "indirect control" elements that made them strategy-simulation more than tactical-strategy.

Note: Driftlands, I played one of the versions of it here, and didn't really enjoy it at all.

EDIT: I guess one "comparable" is Dark Reign 1, where you can set AI parameters on units to tell them how far and much to pursue enemies,or "go recon" and stuff. But it's still a full normal RTS at its core... Just with some "adjust the unit AI" parameters to improve it if something happens you don't notice.

There are more such games such as total annihilation and warlords battlecry games. warlords even come with rpg ai roles for every unit. agressive caster, healer etc which makes for a more pleasant playthrough all together.
On the other hand of the spectrum you find the more complex combat simulations such as Graviteam games (also published by strategy first btw) or something such as command ops 2. Both not on gog btw. They make for quite interesting titles though watching youtube explanatory video's multiple times seems mandatory to make anything out of those titles. And to continu in the hardcore scene of course War in the East and something such as Distant Worlds - 2 have options that let specify which parts of the gameplay you will leave into the able hands of the ai assistants, though i would argue that a game that from the ground up is build to be commanded indirected will be infinitely more interesting than some hyrbid
