Sea of Stars (a super promising RPG from Sabotage Studio) launched today and on GOG... radio silence so far. Hoping that changes soon because there's no good reason for it not to be here, especially since indie games are the one area where GOG generally tends to have good traction. The game's definitely high-profile enough, and there's no exclusivity blocking it. GOG's been getting a lot of really good games lately, but this one definitely stings.

Has the dev said anything or given any indication that it'll show up here eventually? Obviously, I'd prefer to buy it here if I can, but I'll buy it elsewhere if it's going to be some kind of interminable wait. I just don't have the patience anymore.

The developers received many requests but still made it clear that they weren't interested in a release on GOG while providing the usual vague promises about future possibilities.

Does suck. I don't think there was anything gog could do; not enough money to be made here for many devs unfortunately, it seems

Short on things to play? I have the opposite problem. Not enough time to keep up. Do play the Trails series if you have not. They are better JRPGs anyway.

The weird thing is just, Sea of Stars is has been released almost everywhere... i asume it is even running on some "toaster-chip", but simply not on GoG so far... so indeed people are curious. There must be some reason...

I am not arguing regarding its quality, because this is not the point here. What surely can be said "GoG got a lof of great games that are of comparable quality", this is certain.

I got 8 games of this class (and genre, as i see it) in my collection and so far i am not finish with those; all of them available on GoG.

Just looked at the Steam page I'm not buying it but if it comes here to gog I think I will. It looks very much like, I dunno, maybe some of those old JRPG's from years ago. Looks intriguing. But when you say "almost everywhere" does that mean almost everywhere that sells Steam keys, or versions that don't require Steam?

Well, as far as i can say it has been released on any "mainstream-console": PS4, PS5. Xbox One, Xbox SX, Nintendo Switch and of course on Steam.

Since the consoles "allone" are probably making over 80% of the total profit, Steam adds maybe another 10-20%.

If they would use GoG, Epic and some other platforms for PC... it may only add up a few % more of total profit and sells... so they simply did not feel the urge releasing it here and it is not DRM free. they do not feel any urge doing so.

Sure... it will not take long being able to get a cracked Steam copy somewhere... However, if it comes to the sheer profit... they simply do not care as it will run on every single console, including some toasters. The PC market is not even important to them in this case. Yet they still may get 10-20% more sells but Steam, including "the big keyseller-train following them", was the only thing they had to use for it.

Surely very rational, done by the mind and profit based, decision... not much with the heart. I am happy this is not the standard condition; but i guess they are more than busy already getting "to work" their game on so many consoles at once... so they could even be short on ressources at the current time.

This is not a JRPG, it is from a small studio based in Quebec. Sure, it is 2D retro-style, and usually called "homage to the old 16-bit JRPG-era.

If see of Stars is not in the JRPG genre what genre do you put it in? Or must you define genres by geography and thus call Baldurs Gate 3 a BRPG. Pretty unhelpful IMO.

Bringing a game to GoG isn't in the same league as bringing it to Xbox, Playstation or Switch.
As far as I can see, the game hasn't been released on Epic Game Store either.
Compared to the big players and their platforms, gaming on PC has lost a lot of ground (and thus financial importance).

On another note:
Sabotage's earlier game "The Messenger" was indeed released on GoG here. But the game card lists Devolver Digital as its publisher.
I'm not 100% sure but the new game Sea of Stars might be self-published.

Final Fantasy 16 is still influenced by Japanese culture and a real JRPG, yet they was trying to become "inspired" by the west... kinda the same the west is now doing by those retro 2D-RPGs, inspired by the 16-bit era JRPGs.

However, Final Fantasy 16 is much closer to the JRPG roots compared to Final Fantasy 15, which was a real mess as this "western style" was not tasty at all.
