Thanks to our distinguished chimp and to snowkatt for the links. Looks like i can give it another try, finally. The second mod seems to be exactly what i need.

E's are.good, e's are good, e's ebeneezer good. Fuck it, now I have that song in my head. Back to the 80'a anyone?

If I review a movie like the original Robocop, maybe it includes nostalgia too.

Someone who saw it the first time some years ago just kept going about the poor level of robot animation, and commenting on everything on the movie "yeah, in the 80s they used to do that", as in to point out how negatively old-fashioned the movie is.

So who is right and who is wrong? Maybe both, Robocop can be a great movie (with nostalgic goggles), or a sorry ass movie with very low production values. I mean, stop-motion animation for ED-209? Get out of here!

If classic GOG games are reviewed with no nostalgia at all, I guess they always comment about the poor graphics and audio the very least. Yeah, Ultima Underworld's graphics engine is nothing to write about today and it has rather cumbersome controls, but I'd still write a positive review of it.

Narp! Thursday is still "need help" day - though the "need frinds" contingent has been relegated to every last sunday of octember!

And yet if they push and get 4k televisions, it's the older movies (pre 2000) that will really be 4k, while all the CGI and other modern special effects are done in post (generally to 2k resolution), meaning to make a movie 4k you have to redo all of them, vs all the effects captured on camera which are still stored on the film itself (assuming it survived).

But that's just it's own quip. Honestly I loved stuff from the 80's. Fraggle Rock as one of my all time favorite shows in the world, and yet it's all puppets, costumes, and little glass sticks you can see that helps control the hands which you quickly tune out.

"Dear! Tell your son he's not nothing!"
"Son, You're not nothing. You're big, You eat well.. And you can REALLY fill a room!"
"Aww you're just trying to make me feel good..."

Aaahhhh my nostalgia senses are tingling...

Then again there's plenty of low quality stuff: Captain Planet, TMNT, etc...

flubbucket: My son loves them and plays them frequently.

I need a game I can play drunk....and those are NOT drunk-playable.
avatar
tinyE: We need a thread for that; a lot of folks would find it very useful. I don't drink anymore but for ten years that is all I did so I feel I'd have something to offer. :P
Actually I used to play Sins of a Solar Empire and get drunk with friends. First in real life lan and then when we moved to different places we did it through the net. It's a perfect game to play while getting drunk, being drunk and just talking about whatever shit comes to mind. Another game like that would be Kohan.

So since Sins was published here I've been meaning to create a thread where I ask for participants for some drunken gaming with Sins. Haven't got the opportunity yet. :)

Edit: Oh and the eighties is the greatest 10 year period ever! The music, films, games all of it! :D

The problem for me is I think there are more drunk playable games now, and now I don't drink anymore. When I lived in a bottle there was the original Doom and a few others along with the dying NES and Genesis consoles, but you just couldn't play those loaded, at least I couldn't. I would imagine some of the great crawlers like the Diablos and Titan Quest would be great drunk but I'm not risking my life to find out. :P

For you I'd play Sins sober. :)

I've always preferred strategy games when drinking. Slow RTS or turnbased are perfect. You have something to do most of the time while being able to still focus on just chatting with your friends. The actual game is a nice fall back topic too. :)
Then there's the Serious Sam games. Those are really good for that too.

On those occasions I drink alcohol and play games by myself I tend to play strategy games too. It's the most relaxing genre I've found.

Basically anything that doesn't require too much focus or concentration. So yeah Doom and such aren't very good. At least in SS you could run and gun and you'd be bound to hit something. Dying wasn't that bad either.

Hm. I dunno. I've always found it hard to find party games so if it's harder now I have no idea.

Most of the really old game are almost unplayable unless you grew up with them. Thus, its kind of pointless to sell a game made in the late 80s if you know the only people playing it will be people that were in that time. Gog should be good old thieves.

zeogold: Not necessarily. You could take a picture of the future. I have a camera that does it, only problem is that the moment of the photo it takes has already passed by the time you develop it.
Reminds me of the excellent low-budget sci-fi film "Time Lapse", still on Netflix. It's about a Polaroid-like camera that only takes pictures of the future. If you think about it (the movie, after you've seen), just imagine what a burden it is to ALWAYS have to be standing in front of your livingroom window at 8p every night for the rest of your life? Or until you're just so rich you don't care any more.

Have to disagree with the Doom sobriety test. I hardly ever played that game sober. Between the years of 1995 and 2000 there was rarely a free moment when I wasn't playing a game like Doom and completely bent sideways on some form of inebriation assistant. Yet somehow I still managed to beat both Doom 1 and 2. Working thumbs and all. I don't want to suggest or promote drug and/or alcohol use for young gamers... but I gotta tell ya, playing
Doom while lit up is an amazing experience.

Getting older has had far more detrimental effects on my gaming hobby than a bottle of Jack Daniels ever could. And really, where's the ESRB rating for 'your too damned old to play this any more'?

zeogold: LSD.
avatar
rtcvb32: Seems a little harsh... Wouldn't DMT be a better choice?
can you even game on DMT? a small dose of LSD would probably make most games kick-ass (if you're into that sort of thing)
like, take a tab, cut it into 1/8th and do that and just get a little "there"...not that I'd know from experience, other people told me about it...seriously

also...redneck rampage has a built-in "get drunk" factor that rocks!

Yeah the getting old part is making some genres harder and harder to play. :(

There is a difference between playing and playing well. I can manage Doom drunk but I don't manage well. ;)
Driving games on the other hand. For some reason I tend to play them better when drunk than sober. I have no idea why. :S
