faroot: I'm still willing to believe I overlooked something, but that wasn't it...in that message fr33ksh0w2012 just says

"Not that IT MEANS all the Rom's are going to be sold on steam!"

...which either means all roms will or won't be sold on steam, depending on whether you think the "not" is literal versus a typo for "no, it means..."

But that particular post doesn't say anything about "Retroarch was being put into the Steam client".

Almost immediately they say something excited about ROMS and Gabe Newel, then a post about Nintendo and ROMs, and then end of that page.

But nothing about integration into the Steam client. Sorry if I'm being dense somehow.
You have read in the context of the text he quoted that said it was adding DRM. He says Not that (missing comma) IT MEANS all the roms are going to be sold on steam!

It's implied. Perhaps poorly. Maybe I read into what he was saying too much. It just appears that he believed Retroarch was getting integrated into Steam so that they can sell ROMs.

Well maybe I was just confusing myself. I suppose one could say that anything offered on Steam, *especially* if steam features (cloud/achievements/cards etc) are offered, is "integrated into the client". I guess.

Spectre: Is retroarch the annoying emulator that forces you to download extra parts through its own program?
It's a front-end, not a emulator.

paladin181: fr33ksh0w2012 seemed to be under that impression and was spreading the info. I can blame it on his brain injury, but that's what got a few people hyped up on this thread.
paladin181 did you actually read the article's title https://www.ausgamers.com/news/read/3618719/popular-emulation-platform-retroarch-is-headed-to-steam

Popular Emulation Platform RetroArch is Headed to Steam

But as it's technically a front-end, the announcement notes "there is nothing particularly about RetroArch or the Libretro API that has anything to do with emulators". But then immediately concedes, "Most do it, Use it for this purpose". The word emulation is also listed in the product description. For those that know about RetroArch, it is indeed a powerful front-end that allows for management and emulation of a wide range of classic hardware via various 'cores'.

An all in one solution that is versatile and can run on a number of platforms and devices as a way to play classic games via a graphical interface. Although it does take some getting used to and the setup process isn't exactly press a button and now you can play every SNES game that ever existed.

That said RetroArch supports a staggering number of old hardware and consoles via emulation, and has used this Steam announcement to say, "we are open to dialogue with game developers/publishers that have the rights to original IP who want to bring their games over to Steam through the use of RetroArch".

RetroArch has a tentative release date of July 30 - and it's store page is now live.

I read the article and the title... And nothing in there says anything except Retroarch will be available on Steam, and they're open to talk to anyone who wants to release their games there. Nothing has been negotiated on that front. Nothing has been done yet. As of right now, with how it stands, Retroarch will be available on Steam.

Yikes. Now I understand why their UI is so darn bad :) because they're hostile to people by default
