The PS2 era Winning Eleven/PES games are the best football games ever made and anyone who disagrees is wrong.

GOG should work with Konami to get Winning Eleven 7 - even if stripped of licenses. Players can patch it with official kits and names later if they want.

Would be wonderful to get an official digital release.

The only way I could see this happening, is if GOG were already on good terms, and GOG offered to do all the work to get the the games running. So for starters, we can only hope that enough people are happy to buy the already released Konami games on GOG.

A rant: It kills me that people talk about console games making their way on GOG, but the Kohan series which is an absolute masterpiece, and is already playable on modern systems, is forgotten by all...

I went out and brought the boxed copies for kohan, can’t see it coming here. They are not too expensive.

I also have the series: the original CDs, my home-made CD copies, and I own them on STEAM. But it would be nice to have it here DRM-Free, without requiring me to install the patches and No-CD cracks.

I've play a fair bit of football games back in the day and still have a few boxed cd's.
I can't recall the exact year, probably 2008/2009 when Konami introduced a single player mode, where you control a single character during the carrer. That time was the peak of the series.
Licensing may be a issue, since most games had at least some licensed competition.

Actually the best football game ever made, by far, is Nintendo World Cup. Eventually followed by Mario Smash Futebowl but that's too much Mario for my taste...

This has to be a misspelling, because in Romanian, word for word, that would literally be: Mario Smash F*ck bowl.

I do have fond memories of Winning Eleven 4 for the PS1 as well.

Anyways, Winning Eleven 9 was amazing. Remember spending so much time with that game and it's patches.

Nostalgia Trip

Wasn't it called Fantasista mode? There's also an Namco Arcade / PS1 game with a similar play style called Libero Grande.

Only God knows how many hours have I spent playing Winning Eleven 7 back in the mid 2000 on the PC. I remember player creation/modification to be so fucking detailed for such small players on the field.

I get what you are saying, but these PES games were on PC too and to this day they still have a modding community making updates for player rosters and kits.

In Portugal at least was some kind of "Road to Glory" or something like that.
Was a very fun mode where you control only one player in the field, so positioning itself correctly and "trust" the team was kinda key factor. Growing stats, get to play on better teams and all that jazz, can we call it a RPG mode? O.o

Edit:
Wikipedia PES 2009
PES 2009 also features a new game mode called 'Become A Legend', much like 'Be a Pro' from the EA Sports FIFA Series. This mode was originally only in the Japanese versions by the name of Fantasista

Never played any football games (some old console ones as a kid aside), nor did any of my friends but I did hear that PES was better than FIFA...however, for some reason, it was always FIFA that was played competitively and broadcasted on TV in the 00s. Makes me wonder whether EA showed some money for that and Konami didn't care or if there was some bias in the competitive regulatory bodies.
Hi,

I've recently installed it but it's crippled by SecuROM.

The only way to play it on modern hardware and OS is using an unofficial patch. So yes, it'd be amazing to see it on GOG.

Most of the teams are unlicenced in PES 3 / WE 7. Thus, having the few licences stripped would not be a hard hit.

This game will be 20 years old this year and to celebrate it, I'm currently working on a option file / patch to restore all team names, player names, stadium names, club emblems and update kits.

I'll publish it here too if there's an interest.

Back in 00's, at University campus, only PES was played competitively but it was of course unofficial.

In Europe, there was the so-called PES League which was broadcasted. It was an official event.

Thank you for undertaking this duty that Konami is too lazy to do; my only suggestion is to also post your findings on PCGamingWiki.
