Meteor shower. Stop. People are dying. Stop. Send help. Stop.

The 2001 first-person 3D shooter Venom. Codename: Outbreak, a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. spiritual predecessor by GSC Game World, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows.

You are sent to investigate the site of a meteor shower that left no survivors - after the scientists, followed by a military squad, disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Could it be aliens, or just a form of mass psychosis? That’s for you to find out.

In Venom. Codename: Outbreak your squad will be a very candid affair - just you and another soldier to watch your back. Fortunately, everyone on base is the best of the best and the AI of the game’s NPCs got many a word of praise, so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about them not doing their job. Should something start to go wrong, you can easily switch characters and take control of your partner - or play through the missions with a friend in 2-player LAN co-op mode. Sometimes, this will be one of the keys to getting through a mission alive.

Try to solve the mystery of the valley showered with meteors in Venom. Codename: Outbreak DRM-free at GOG.com - and most of all, try to get back alive.

What does the press say?

“Crawling across the forest floor to tag a one-shot kill on a guard whose head was barely visible in a tower at 186 meters is a thrill unlike any other.” -- GameSpy

“Outbreak seems almost surreally whimsical in its treatment of a special forces vs. alien conflict.” -- Game Over Online

“Codename: Outbreak is a fun game. Especially the later missions in the campaign which are particularly atmospheric and intense, requiring careful picking of character skills and meticulous execution of strategies.” -- Play.tm
Wow, really, GOG? Never seen this come to GOG.

However, did you guys fix the bugs? Or at least install the 2.1 patch?

"Codename Broken"

Codename: Outbreak is a FPS developed by GSC Game World. For those bored to read my long rumbling I will show you what the game is all about here, in the very intro of the review. Nothing special… that's all I can say about the game. But does this explain the very low score? No, it doesn't. In fact if the game was just that I would give it a 6/10 just for the things it does good… however the biggest problem with Codename: Outbreak is how damn broken it is. What we have here is a half-finished, untested product full of badly designed mechanisms, full of game crashing bugs, all making the whole experience very annoying.

Riotact: Did this used to be just "Outbreak" (ie. no venom in the name)?

Telika: Yes.

Though i think the "codename" was always there, even if tiny...
Thanks, Yes Codename is there in the title too, IIRC it wasn't that great tbh, Ill give it a shot on disc before buying .

opeter, is that you (again)?
I've never heard of this before, but it seems janky...and intriguing :o

Grargar: opeter, is that you (again)?
Yeah :)
Played the first stage of it a while back. Reminded me of a mixture of Quake (in terms of movement speed), and Stalker (mainly the rookie village area). Haven't bothered to progress any further, but it was definitely interesting. You can see the resemblance.
I have this on CD. I hope it'll be possible to redeem it.
Boring game, tbh.

Enebias: Very interesting. I am a fan of everything Special-Operations and Alien related, and considering who id the developer behind it...

zeffyr: They're guys who made STALKER games, but it was their first game.
And it's a very good one! It reminds me of Delta Force in some ways *in "some" ways* :)
I'm not one of those who actually consider a purchase based on the company's values/history, but I gotta say that the good old GSC Game World, before their crash, amazes me. An ukranian -out of the "game world axis": Japan, Western Europe and the USA- dev, gifting the world with amazing games?
Wow!
Never played this but do vaguely remember seeing this in a pc mag. Not sure is if it would interest me or not.
I've never heard of this, looks really cool. I'm curious about how good the multiplayer is.(not that I could find anyone to play with anyway)
This seems interesting, but we do need gameplay/review videos.
I remember this game from review in local PC gaming magazine. It got around 65% at the time it came out.

Woah! Not expected this to appear out of nowhere.

When I bought this game (bargain bin) I didn't expect much, but this was a rare occasion that the bin contained gold, this game surprised me in a lot of ways, a lot of depth for an FPS as you can control your squadmate and equip your soldiers before each mission and it has an inventory. Also your soldiers gain experience (I think but not sure).
I really liked the open outdoor levels and this game predates Far Cry by several years which is pretty impressive.
The low review scores I think come mostly because of bugs, though I never experienced severe crashes, there are cases you have to switch characters because your squadmate isn't going down a ladder sort of bugs.

And the Ukrainian accent voice acting only adds charm. :^)

Odd. Both the title (Codename: Outbreak) and the box front cover art feel very familiar to me, yet the game itself doesn't.

I wouldn't be surprised I have the retail version lying somewhere, but I've never just properly played it.
Got this on disc, as Codename: Outbreak (no "Venom"), published by Virgin Interactive, but I guess I'll probably buy it here too, for the sake of convenience when trying to run it on a modern system.

Have to admit, looking at the back of the case, the system requirements made me smile. The original recommended specs are a PIII 500MHz, 128 MB RAM, and a Riva TNT2 32MB graphics card.

I know GOG have to take into account the overheads of modern systems, so I'm not saying that their current requirements are wrong. I'm just amused by the system requirements jump. :-)
