This game was a huge letdown for me, and I honestly haven't seen it through to the end because it's taken away what made the first reboot so good. It's still very pretty and the guns are satisfying to use, but the swordplay, powers, humor, story all pale in comparison to the original.

The SW reboot was a perfectlyy paced, focussed, viscerally playing, linear, story driven game with entertaining characters, particularly great was the banter between Wang and the tag-a-long demon Hoji. This game dispenses with all that and often just devolves into feeling like a mindless arena shooter. With everything randomly generated from tiles there's no real feeling of progression through a world.

This game also dumbed down the interface for ki powers, changing the inputs to something more console friendly, where as the method of imputting abilities in the first game involved sequence taps of the WASD that felt properly designed for PC and were fast, tactile and so much more satisfying.

TBH, I never used any ki powers beside healing and the shield in the first one. It just seemed that the offensive ki powers were redundant and much less effective at disposing enemies than just shooting/slicing them apart.

But I completely agree on the story. The first game has a surprisingly deep story for what the game is.

In the second game it's just there for the sake of being there.

SW1 is about the overall experience. SW2 is only about the action (which is very good at its core).

KasperHviid: I couldn't really get into the first one, so I wouldn't have bought the sequel. But now that I got it for free (Voted for Superhot, but whatevs) I thought I might give it a chance. Downloading now. Have any of you tried it?
Yeah, I finished it all, side-quests included.

It's fun, but can get quite repetitive. There's plenty of weapon variation that attempts to help you overcome that feeling of massacring the same god damn critters over and over again, but yeah... I found it adequately paced in small doses. I only played single player though, so there's that - they say multiplayer/co-op is supposed to be more fun.

That being said, don't compare it to the first Shadow Warrior, as it's quite different. SW2 is a mission-based open world FPS with a focus on action and gameplay, whereas SW is a classic linear shooter with a focus on, well, ok still action, but also the story-line.

All in all I liked it. I'm actually thinking of playing it all over again, which I don't do a lot, especially not with shooters in mind.

Leroux: Is there any story continuity between SW1 and SW2? Or can you play them independently of each other without feeling like you've missed something?
I only ever finished the second so far, playing very little of the first, and didn't get the feeling I missed much.

I played SW 2 for a few days now.

I appreciate that GOG gave it away for free.

I don't find it to be anywhere nearly as good as its acclaim led me to think it would be.

To me the levels feel soul-less, except the one that comprises the second story mission (the one just after the Prologue mission). For some reason I found that one level to be interesting.

I don't appreciate the game's crudeness either. It tries way too hard to be funny, but it just isn't.

I wouldn't say the gameplay is terrible, but it's definitely not great. It's pretty mediocre.
First person - no thanks
Shooter - no thanks
Action game controlled by mouse/keyboard - no thanks
Randomly generated levels - no thanks
Online play - no thanks
Windows only - no thanks

I've not played it yet since it's really not my type of game (and my PC probably isn't good enough) but I'll give it a go when I get a better computer since it was free (if I can get it running with Wine on Linux).
I like it more than the 2013 reboot.
