You know one of those Star Trek games I keep mentioning every time the topic of "what games would you like GOG to release" comes up? Well, it's playable in a browser thanks to some determined fan, and remastered in better quality than ever!

Trailer

It's a great opportunity to play a game seemingly lost to time. A treat for Trek fans for sure, though the game is far from great. For example, there's no feedback on the screen when interacting with anything, like a console or a hypospray, which can make entering a correct sequence frustrating. There are also some nerdy nitpicks to have, like the fact that, surely because of budget constraints, they are using Voyager-era uniforms (wrong for the Wolf 359-battle period).

On the other hand, the game is full of John de Lancie as always having a ball as Q. And while sometimes the game is frustrating, it's also very clever and very in character for Q how making the wrong choice can lead you to playing out a scenario where you'll learn something necessary to succeed after Q helpfully rewinds time a bit to give you another chance. "Must you be so linear, Jean-Luc?"

Oh, and you might want to have a pen an paper on hand to write some stuff down.

Thanks for sharing. Checking it out right now. Wish there was a way to archive this.

P.S. The acting! Oh, the acting!

Yeah... at least some of it. I wonder if it wouldn't have been better if they didn't go with the first person perspective gimmick, and a silent protagonist. It just makes everything much more awkward than it needs to be. And when the actors are interacting with one another rather than with the player, they are instantly better. There's actually a couple characters here I wouldn't mind seeing a show (though you need to read their bios on the scanner device Q gives you to really know who's who).

Agreed. Feels like they do a better job when bouncing off each other's skills than talking straight into the camera.
I own a retail copy of this game on disc. I still have the original box it came in, too; it had one of those fancy 90s packages with embossed lettering. Lots of fun, and great production values. Apparently the game was coded specifically so that it would only run on Windows 95, and required a patch if you wanted to try to get it running on another OS.

I can't imagine this will stay online for very long, though. CBS has a reputation for being draconian when it comes to going after Star Trek fan projects, let alone copying an entire official product. This game may no longer be sold or available to play on modern computers, but there's also no way that it's out of copyright.
That looks absolutely amazing! Thanks for sharing this Breja. :)

Now that's a nice surprise! Thank you for sharing!
As a Star Trek fan of old, I don't care if the acting is a bit stiff or the first person view is awkward.
Geek mode engaged!

In the game's help section it says:

IS THIS OFFICIAL?
No, not it any way. This is a fan project. Please see the legal disclaimer below for more details.

IS THIS LEGAL?
That's a grey area. It isn't possible to play the original Borg game on any modern PC or Mac, and it isn't possible to purchase it anywhere any more. Technically, the game is "abandonware". That said, the legal rights holders of Star Trek would be well within their rights to issue me with a C&D order - and should that happen I will, of course, comply and take this site offline. My advice would be to enjoy this while you can, because it might go away.

That is wonderful fan project, made available in the worst way.

I do not understand why someone that spend so much time and work, is publishing his efforts knowing that it will be taken down and - contrary to his intentions - will soon be forgotten (unless his intention is to be famous of the youtube trailer, but maybe it will also be taken by C&D). Huge load on server (artificially increased by the imminent C&D) makes the game unplayable and it will probably stay this way till it is taken down.

A silent release of offline package via torrent network, would make the project alive for years. Yes, it would be illegal (just like NLF, NLF2 or Warcraft: Adventure fan projects), but so is this web browser version.

I know this is emotional post I try to avoid, but I just had to vent out. I simply cannot stand when something valuble goes in vain.

Thank you for sharing Breja.

Not true.
This remastered version looks a lot better though.
Cool!
Thanks for sharing :)
Damn. All this talk of legal issues made me realise that in my enthusiasm I may have made a mistake by posting this. Is this against the forum rules? I'm honestly not sure now.

Well, if I fall perpetually radio silent come Monday at least you'll all know why.
You linked a YouTube video of a trailer. You did nothing wrong.

Also, as mentioned on their website, it's a legal grey area. If the creators get a C&D letter, they'll have to take it down (a) out of respect for the copyright holders, b) spending money on lawyers for a fan project against a corp is pointless), even if the law protects both parties in this case, which is confusing.

The game is quite playable (or at least it was for me, some buffering notwithstanding). As for the rest, I can only assume the person behind wants everything to be above board and wants the rights owners to be able to pull it down if they so choose.

I hope against hope that maybe by some miracle of oversight or leniency it will survive. Even more so as there's a second FMV game, Star Trek Klingon, that I would love to get a second lease on life like this too.

I think so too, which is why I didn't frantically delete the OP. But it wouldn't be the first time the mods see things differently than I do ;)
