The anime is a product of purely no progress. You could reply the first 20 or so episodes of Indigo League and get the same point across, just replace "Butterfree" with who the heck knows.

As for the other side of the coin, Pokemon as a franchise that has hit the Nadir especially in this day and age of being purified viscera compared to other franchises in terms of being low effort and rushed out a la the yearly Madden game because Management says so.

I actualy can find a (paper thin) plot and progression in the anime. For both Ash and the Team Rocket Trio. So I have no unforgivable problem on that department.

But I draw the line when the pokemon franchise starts to eliminate pokemons from the franchise exchanging them to some BS other creatures (ultra beasts, or digimon, or whatever).
