Carradice: There was a more modern version of Colonization, right? As a sort of official mod for one of the Civilization games?
avatar
Cavalary: Civilization 4
And it's included in the edition available on GOG.

OldFatGuy: Yeah, it's a much better looking version (though some preferred the older gameplay... I actually liked the newer version better myself, YMMV) that comes with Civ IV complete.
Thank you guys!!!! Heading to re-install this old flame, Civ IV! Let us see what the new Colonization has to offer :)

DubConqueror: I found the topic title interesting [...] I forgot to mention three games that I enjoyed, that are available here on Magog, that too have happiness of the people as an important factor. If you count city builders as strategy games that is:

Children of the Nile

Civ City Rome

Imperium Romanum

It so happens that all three were games that I played before they we're released on GOG (respectively on Steam, on disc and Gamersgate, if I remember well), then double-dipped when they got released here on GOG, so I could own DRM-free installers for the games, even if I did already own them and had already played them.
Thanks for the tips, DubConqueror. Children of the Nile is getting multiple recommendations. I guess I ought to check it! Imperium Romanum, has nice reviews here in GOG, they mention it is more relaxing than Caesar (plebs are needed!). Good.

Civ City Rome, I gave it a shot some years ago. Did not click with me for some reason at the time (well, maybe some shiny thing crossed my path...).

Breja: I'm not sure if this applies, since I don't really play 4x games and prefer a bit more streamlined strategies. Anyway - I tend to roleplay everything. Almost any game I play, if there's anything to "latch onto" so to speak, I'll try to roleplay at least a bit. So when playing something like the Total War games for example, I don't just try to win. I have a whole story developing in my head based on how things are going, the traits of kings and generals etc. and sometimes I'll radically change my strategy and the way I run things when the king dies and is replaced by a new one. New king - new policy. So for a time I'll play aggressively, sacking every town, squeezing every dime with taxes etc. Then the next king may be far less cruel, lower taxes, spare conquered population. One will focus on military infrastacture, the next on farming and trade.
Man, I like this. I guess I play a bit like this. Some strategy games are so much better (IMHO) if you RP a bit (or a lot, like you mention!). Make your own rules and stick to them... As in, this is the way your nation/faction will behave... Super fun, and possibly it has little to do with the "win no matter how" approach encouraged by MP. Then again, if you can win in MP in your own terms, that sounds like fun, although I do not really MP these days, and I am not sure that most people MPing care much about RP in strategy games (MPers, correct me if I am wrong).

Your comment made me thing about epic wars in Civilization IV, where a nation with a smaller army had to defend in a tiresome war from an aggressive neighbour, until eventually the moment to strike back arrived. Felt a bit like 1944, if you know what I mean (only with pikes).

Way to go, Breja. RP + strategy = fun (for others, YMMV, I guess, but give it a try...).

Carradice: Now, what about the wellbeing of the enemy civilians?

Do you take any of these matters into consideration ever, when playing?
I had to think about that part for a while.

Seriously, like of course i think of the wellbeing of the enemy civilians. For one, i rarely use Nukes. Also, i'm not one to implement a scorched earth stratagem without a considerate amount of consideration being played out. Also, dissident assets in enemy societies can be used to favor your own cause, be it by rallying the local population against the evil ruler to go as far having some extra options during a military invasion, opening gates from inside walls, divisions that change colour. Also, sometimes you are able to create dissident assets by hampering food and other tradelines, Isolating territories.... Yea, of course we think about enemy civilians, a self respecting war game can't go without those features! Even if they only implement the war fatigue bar for your own people. And even if your only personal thought goes something along the lines of " I'm sure the enemies peeps are way better off living under my benevolance "
The Close Combat series simulated rather well a morale and wounding system.
Though in most cases, you'd end up dead vs routed.
Empire Earth has a morale thing around houses. I never really understood how it works, but i'm guessing it's trying to simulate soldiers fighting harder for their own homes or families.

In Paradox's games like Europa Universalis, the population can become discontent and cause rebellions to pop up. around your provinces.

Ever played any of the Crusader Kings titles? Your playstyle would fit those (or CK II, at least) to a T.

Haven't yet, but I've got Crusader Kings 2 in my backlog, which is not quite what it used to be so it's day might be coming. I also just bought Plebby Quest: The Crusades as a sort of lightweight alternative.
