Over the past 3 months or so, that wouldn't have been bad luck. That would have been a guarantee. It's crazy and is likely to really change things if this is how the winters are going to be from now on.

It's raining here, and I'm not in the UK! I'm in Northern California, where it's 52 F/11 C, plus we have a flood warning in effect.

Flood warning? Where the heck are you at that there's a flood warning? A coastal city?

Nope, I'm in the mountains a few hours north of San Francisco near where the redwoods grow.

Oh yea, i saw the news on the floods.

I was very confused actually? .... my dad is from England, so i sarcastically gave my interpretation of what the bystanders in England were thinking.... "dahh, um, i think its rain?" As if the British never saw rain before and are acting all surprised by it! ???

But seriously, what i don't understand is how a country that experiences constant rain would be so surprised and unprepared for floods??

Here in Seybothenreuth (Germany, close to Bayreuth) it's about -7°C and I think it's snowing but I'm not sure it's too dark outside.
It'll get colder the next few days (up to -17°C) but unfortunatly next week it'll get warm again (3°C - -(1°C)).

You can, if you dress well enough. I spent a couple hours outside pushing snow, and feeding the horses.

It's warmed up a bunch though - all the way to -23C now.

Pretty nice here at the moment in the bible belt. 40 degrees during the day, low 40s/high 30s at night. Clear skies and light wind.

But spring is coming, and the dead leaves are going to get blown away by the coming twisters. I'm wondering how long it is before we get late winter snow-nadoes arriving during the eruption of a 5.0 earthquake... with giant frogs falling from the sky.

That's an odd place for a flood warning. Mudslides, maybe, but floods? I wonder why that is.

It's less likely where I am, but lower-lying areas and places near bodies of water are at risk. The rain has been coming down hard this month, with close to 11 inches and more coming this week. Anyway, the flood warning should lift in a few hours.

Ah, that makes more sense, in the lower areas where the rain can accumulate. Stay warm and dry out there, eh?

Staying dry shouldn't be too difficult since I should have enough cover if I go out, but staying warm is another matter. I just need more time to get accustomed to the cold here, though I won't freeze to death :)

Now it is not so cold here as before, but still pretty cold. Currently it is around -13 C (8 F), yesterday it was -6 C (21 F). I guess it will remain about the same the rest of the week. Some snow is falling, I think this is actually the nicest kind of winter weather, powdery snow everywhere and around -10 C. You can't make snowballs or snowmen easily with such powdery snow, but that's fine with me.

The odd thing is how big the temperature differences here are. I think now or tomorrow it is about -28 C (-18 F) a couple hundred kilometers to the east, while only -2 C (+28 F) a couple hundred kilometers to the south and SW. But if you go a bit further to west, there it is colder again (-10 C/+8 F).

The chilliest January for me was probably many years ago when I was in Thailand. At some nights the temperatures went down to around +12 C (54 F), day temperatures were pleasant 28 C (82 F) or so.

The problem was that the temperatures were the same indoors, around that +12 C. As much Finnish as I am, I am not used to sleeping in that cold indoors, especially as the blankets there were very thin. I didn't go to shower either until the higher day temperatures kicked in. My clothing was mostly just T-shirts and shorts. They didn't have any heaters either etc.

At least in Finland it is cozy and warm when you are indoors...
