paladin181: I have erased a save several hours in on a choice heavy game with no save slot back-ups. Vampyr, I'm looking at you. I even modified a AHK script to help back-up saves. There's a particular choice at the end of chapter 2 where the options you choose do not obviously lead to the results you get. Like, you get the opposite result you're trying to achieve in this case. It's not a mistake, it's just written that way, and it's annoying (and likely done exactly like that on purpose by the devs to fuck your progress in a game that autosaves often with ONE slot).
Oh yes, I know that one well. I actually backtracked and started a whole new game thanks to a choice of someone's fate in Chapter 2. For one I didn't like how sloppy I was playing the game anyway and secondly I chose what I thought was a good option but the game was so cruelly written it turned out to be a trap choice and I didn't have a backup I liked to go back to.

Vampyr I did end up enjoying, but it had so many eccentricities that I couldn't fully recommend it to others. Geez it's a weirdly designed game.

dtgreene: For example, when you are about to quit, in the confirmation pop-up that appears, the game tells you how long it's been since your last save, which is very helpful in case you intend to save and quit, but forget to save.

BreOl72: I think we already have that in many (most?) games.
A message saying: "Are you sure you want to quit? All unsaved progress will be lost, if you quit now" [Y/N], or something to that effect.

I don't see what showing the "time since last save" would change.

Either you know it's not been a long time since the last time (at the start of a new chapter, where not much is lost, etc) and you click [Y] - or you are relieved that the game reminds you of saving, and you click [N] and save before exit.

It's not as if anyone would see the message: "last time since save = 5,5 hours" and then decides to exit without saving.
(can't wait to read comments of people who explain to me, why THAT's indeed exactly what THEY will do)
Or you think that you just saved a few seconds ago, but you actually didn't, so if the game says "last time since save = 30 minutes", then you'll realize that you misremembered and will go to save.
I always save manually before quitting, if possible.

In check-point systems I plan in advance, when I am going to quit. And exit the game right after a check-point, closest to that time.
Useful if it's a porta-console-potty game that doesn't let you save anywhere you want.
Otherwise, I've gotten disciplined to timely saves, don't even need a quit save.

In many cases where a game asks this question, you can't manually save everywhere. Otherwise the game could just offer to save for you automatically on quitting (e.g. "Save before quitting? Yes/No") instead of warning that your progress might get lost. And it's not always obvious, or at least quite easy to miss sometimes, whether the game saved or not. So I think a message like "Last save happened 3 minutes ago" is more useful than a general statement of "your progress might get lost" without further info, which only serves to unsettle you if there is no manual save option anyway. At least with the time info, you can make an informed decision - can I live with losing 3 minutes of progress or do I prefer to play on till the next autosave happens?

On a totally related note, autosaves are great until you start relying on them, and then you forget to manually save before a big event and it costs you hours of actual gameplay to go back to your last manual save.
