But more importantly - is there a threat of the originals being pulled from GOG because of this?

It would be quite ironic to lose them the day GOG announced their big "Preservation Program".

I hope in the event we'll at least get some "they'll be gone by >insert date here<" statement.

As for the remasters, they look kinda poor. WC2 looks straight up worse, and WC1 just doesn't look anything like itself, to the point where I'm not sure what the point even is. The whole point of interacting with a classic like that is to, well, experience the classic, warts and all.

Are the remaster worth it?
The classics on GOG haven't been on sale for nearly a year. Before that they had frequent promotions. (Even if only 20% max.) I take that as a sign that those versions aren't actively "managed" or "marketed" anymore. Maybe it's because of that unholy Microsoft--Activision--Blizzard merger.
Not sure if I'm interested. Already super happy with the WC1 + 2 bundle from here. The new graphics barely make a difference.
Just started and liking it so far. My favourite thing is the detail on the models. They added QoL features (like being able to group units in WC1) but for some reason left out the spacebar command to see what the latest thing happened was.

They also didn't go far enough with the graphics. The in-game ones are great, but they just up-res'd the old cutscenes to 4K. The ancient 3D CG isn't made for modern hardware and is just an eye-sore.
Can't re-bind keys for some reason, and the hotkeys for the F10 menu screen was removed. Not a deal breaker for me, but I think these choices are strange.

Syphon72: Are the remaster worth it?
There's this guy called DannyLDD who's been playing Warcraft 2 for several years and made lots of mods for it. He played the remaster and in the end thought it wasn't really worth it. Fans already made several mods (widescreen, save/load bug fix, AI improvements etc) that together makes the game better than what Blizzard delivered.

If you want to see what it's like, he uploaded a playthrough. He plays the final human mission then tried a multiplayer match: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-isQlPAGRIE
wow it looks like shit.

pass.

Thank you for the reply and video.
Oh, Blizzard. Who else could you count on to take a 30 year old classic and making it an online only title with worse graphics and a higher price tag? I'm sure they'll patch pay to play in tournament seasons.

EDIT [from the videl inked by Syphon72): They're calling the music "Remastered"? Sounds just like the original Redbook CD audio to me, with Classic being the fallback MIDI.

Are they actual remasters, or butcherings like ReForged III?
I'm not a fan of the cartoonish graphics, I'll take pixels any day. Same with the cutscenes in the Dark Forces remaster, it looks terrible.

Yep

Switch between visuals on the fly plus remastered posts
comes with the dox box version
Reforged is much better state with ability to switch between visuals
plus if you play WoW you get the meat wagon mount if you're into that.

The price point is very fair

No. The price should be negative since it comes with DRM and lists "Internet connection, Battle.net® Account, and Battle.net® desktop app required to play. ".

And anyone renting it is a buttface for their contribution to the games industry just getting worse and worse.
