weird is that it wasn't advertised nowhere before creating my account (something they should did, imo)

But then the whole point of these kind of promotions is to get as many people as possible to sign. Without advertising this point is missed.

I think they only implemented it earlier this year; at any rate, the first I heard about it was a month or two ago.

When I registered in July 2014, there were 7 free "starter games" in my account: Beneath a Steel Sky, Tyrian 2000, Dragonsphere, Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar, Treasure Adventure Game, Worlds of Ultima: The Savage Empire, and Warsow. There were also five games that one could search for and add to one's account manually: Lure of the Temptress, Teenagent, Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams, Stargunner, and Flight of the Amazon Queen. (Obviously, there are more now.)
However, I think by sometime the following year (2015) they had stopped automatically adding any of the free games to new users' libraries.

How strange. I assume you mean it was in your library from when you first registered? If so, maybe it used to "come standard", but they replaced it in that use with other, less-reviled free titles as they were added to the catalogue. (Maybe by popular demand. :P )
