We hear about classics like The Wire and Twin Peaks all the time, I'm curious to find out what's good right now.

I don't watch TV on TV anymore, like a lot of other people I resort to stuff like streaming, one of the upsides is no ads, but the downside is I can miss some shows entirely. I end up finding about and catching up with some shows a good few seasons into the run, after word of mouth got around.

I just got into Westworld, but that's a week long wait between episodes, so it's the perfect time to catch up on some other stuff. I'm open to suggestions, what's good right now?

Some of the stuff I have seen are Game of Thrones, House of Cards, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the Marvel Netflix shows and Stranger Things.

Some shows I'd love to hear some opinions on: Preacher. Orphan Black, people just sort of stopped talking about that one after it came out, or do I just not frequent the right circles? I hear the next one is the final season. Mr. Robot, I hear the second season is just setup, should I wait for the third season to watch it all together. True Detective, is the second season worth it? Narcos. Hemlock Grove.
My favorite show is Impractical Jokers but it is beyond juvenile so I can't recommend it to everyone.

Also it's not really a show as in story, plot. It's almost a game show really.

DaCostaBR: True Detective, is the second season worth it?
Nope. McAdams is excellent in it, but that doesn't save it.

Am enjoying the Night Manager a huge lot, but it's hardly a series. Been joyously following The Americans, it's very decent but it's now inbetween seasons. I'm inflicting myself Jonathan Creek, it's... less good than the sum of its parts, let's say. And the first season of Broadchurch was okay (the second was tedious). And the Honorable Woman was quite good. Been watching some Luther, and Idris Elba almost compensates the super childish scripts. And am waiting for new eps of Sherlock or Doctor Who (the latter I watch a bit out of habit, although the latest season was better than the few preceeding ones).

I guess that's more or less all from this viewpoint here.

Oh and I assume The Shield is already watched, of course. It's the only one, amongst all these, that can compete with The Wire.

On the off chance I get to watch some current tv, I quite like Homicide Hunter. He has an endless supply of completely deadpan quotes, like "My favorite time to arrest people is 4AM. If they've been out partying, they just got back, and if they have to get up for work they haven't left yet."

He hangs out on the CI channel, which for some reason these days have a buttload of crappy psychic detectives type nonsense.
Am I the only ID Network junky?
- Hell on Wheels just wrapped up a few months ago. Definitely one of my favorites of recent. I'm hoping it won't take too long for the second half of the last season to show up on Netflix.
- Longmire is also way up there for me. I'm glad Netflix saved it after AMC cancelled the show after the third season. Love the books and the series, even though they both have quite a bit different tone.
- I'm also very much enjoying HBO's take on the current Westworld with its mix of Western meets science fiction tech.

You might notice a trend here. ;)

Edit: Completely forgot about The Man in the High Castle. Caught it last year during my trial period for Amazon Prime. I love this kind of alternate history fiction, and the show is really well done. I'm definitely going to sign up for a month of Prime to catch the second season at the end of the year.

I think most of TV series nowadays are very poor, including the ones most people seem to regard as masterpieces. Some worth watching, at least up to a point are

Ash vs Evil Dead- the best thing currently on. The first season was a blast. It's to the Evil Dead franchise what Fury Road was to Mad Max. Bruce Campbell is superb, and the whole thing is the perfect mix of horror and comedy. I can't recommend it enough.

Vikings- first two seasons are great. Season three is where things start going downhill, and I have not yet seen the fourth.

Sherlock - first two season great, third one rather poor, and the special episode last year was utter shite. I'm not sure if I'll bother with fourth season .

Doctor Who - I do love the show the classic and the new, but the last two seasons were pretty terrible, despite Peter Capaldi being absolutely brilliant in the role. However, there's only one season to go before it gets a new showrunner, so hopefuly it will return to form then.

Daredevil- not as great as some would have you belive, and very batman-ish, but it's good superhero stuff in that semi-realistic Nolan style. I ahve not seen the secodn sesason yet, so I don't know if it keeps up.

Penny Dreadful- I loved the first season, but the second was a steep fall in quality, so much so that I only watched two episodes and have not returned to it since.

Star Wars Rebels - of all the stuff done with SW by Disney since they got it, this is probably the best. If you can forgive the boring "filler" episodes, the main story arc episodes are really good (some goofy moments aside), and they "feel" like proper Star Wars, something apparently very hard to do judging by other attempts :P

Oh, and Harmonquest - it's basically some B-list actors getting together to play D&D, with their adventures presented as animation. I found it pretty hilarious, although I guess you have to be a pen & paper RPG type to get into it.

That's the stuff that's currently on. Recently Gravity Falls concluded, my favourite new show in years. It was an animated series from Disney channel of all things, so not something I would ever espect to be good, but it was a true gem, with fantastic writing, immensly likeable characters, surprising emotional depth and all around perfect execution. It's like a cross between Twin Peaks and the 80's kids adventure movies like Goonies, and it was just fantastic. There was also a pretty great Green Lantern Animated series a couple of years back (sadly only for one season), and very good, moody noir-ish crime series Whitechapel which ran for three seasons before it's unfortunate cancellation.

I like Black Sails.

You can watch the first episode free. Although the story gets much better from season 2.

Can't comment on most of those because I haven't seen them.

Totally agree on Vikings. First two seasons are great, some unique stuff, and even showing proper fighting tactics. From season 3 it's downhill, and pretty soon we're back to the idiotic one-on-one "tactics" from every medieval series ever. They had a great thing going, then kind of ruined it along the way.

Speaking of ruining it along the way... Game of Thrones. First season great, second season very good, and from the third season it rapidly goes downhill into cringeworthy and "SHOCK AND AWE" territory. Just about every single fucker in the series is dumber than the swords they wield. George RR Martin must be pretty pissed off. Then again, he's raking in the cash, I'm sure, so maybe he can sort of let it go. Hopefully the next book will be out before 2031 so we can get this story back on track, and try to forget how those hacks lobotomised everything with a pulse in the show.

Don't watch much TV or streaming either, because most of it is shit. Have actually been re-watching Seinfeld, up to season 5 now, and that is brilliant (for the most part).

edit: I agree on Black Sails above. Have watched 3 seasons of that, and it was good. Couldn't stand that holier than though brothel queen (although she's very hot), but the show itself was to my liking.

Not to mention the "history" part goes so completely off the rails there is now some 50 years (I don't remember exactly) difference between when events that on the show are taking place in England and in France simultanously really happened. I know the show was never going to be historicaly accurate, but when they start literally bending the space-time continuum, that's taking things a bit far :P
My daughters went to AniRevo here in Vancouver this summer and my older daughter did a pretty damned good Bill Cipher cosplay (IMO). I may have a photo kicking around somewhere if you're interested.

They did that in Rome as well, but I thought that was a pretty damned good series. Too bad it didn't last beyond 2 seasons.
BTW I did post a couple pages of TV GUIDE in another thread earlier today.

The OP didn't appreciate it , but it may prove useful for anyone looking for something good to watch tonight. :D

Did they at least do anything with the more eerie aspects of the series? The first one was fairly down to earth for the most part, but I liked that undercurrent of wrongness in the world. If the culprit had turned out to be supernatural in some form, I would have totally bought it. Whatever trailers I've seen for the second season I don't remember having any of that.

See the OP. Already watching it, talked about it and the movie in the "I just watched [movie]" thread. The show is way better.

Really? I get that it's a joke but still, I find this current age of serialized shows so much better than what we had before.
