Urge? What about... I'm not immortal and also have other interests? Did I mention that I (also) like huge RPGs?

Not sure I'm going to play anything for the rest of my life. tbh gaming is pretty much a waste of time, and there's lots of other things I'd like to do.
However I think I'll at least return to some of my old favorites from my Gog collection (games from my youth like Albion, Commandos etc., plus older games I've only played for the first time in the past few years like S.T.A.L.K.E.R, Thief, Deus Ex). Might not buy any new games anymore though.

I wouldn't necessarily describe it as a waste of time, at least not anymore than any other hobby that gives you joy. Except of course for those hobby that can earn you bit of extra coin.
But yes, the phrasing "rest of your life" does in retrospect seem to imply a greater prevalence than I had in mind. For some of us it might just mean once/twice a month.

STALKER is another I could perhaps add as well, especially because of the modding scene. Lucky sob :) what I wouldn't give to have a group of friends/family still regularly playing UT99, or any UT really. 2004 I suppose would be my preference, but 99 does have the superior atmosphere perhaps because of its proximity to Unreal style wise.
Never really found Modern Warfare or anything that followed it that appealing.

They do exist.

The one I can say with absolute certainty is Doom. I can always come back after a few years, knowing that the community will have pumped out tons of new custom levels for me to play. The gameplay never gets old and it has one of the most active communities around it even 25+ years after release.

Same here. Still regularly play all UT games, be it 99 or 3. Even 2003, which I actually slightly prefer over 2004. But yeah, playing solo because nobody to play with around me. Bot games 99% of the time. But the fact that the bots in the UT games are very good means they have great replayability.

Probably Dwarf Fortress.
Just because every time I made a new fort - which THIS time will be completely safe, foolproof and prosperous. Absolutely. I'm 100% sure of it. I learn from my previous (4564434568892) mistakes and therefore there's nothing that you sloshed lawn ornaments can do to turn it into !FUN!, ha ha - here goes Urist McCreativeIdiot and find a completely new and awesome way to turn it into smoldering (or sometimes frozen) ruin preceded by the most hilarious chain of events. Usually including cats.

I think it might be the best, or most believable AI I've yet to see in a game. Even from the first Unreal already, where I at least spent as much time in bot matches as I did on the main game.

The original Doom series. I got hooked on those about 5 yrs ago and now apparently I just can't stop.

Somehow none of my forts have lasted long enough for a tantrum spiral to bring it to its knees. I always get dissatisfied with my engineering vision and decide to start over from scratch. But oh no, no cats allowed in my fortress! The ever present danger of FPS death, and tantrum spirals for that matter, makes them perpetually unwelcome. If only I could similarly keep my forts safe from Lycanthropy, like a chain dog trained to smell it, or something.


I distinctly remember thinking as a kid while playing Doom 2: "I'm not going to want to play anything else for the rest of my life"
