Elmofongo: This is not my opinion. My perception in the internet as to the reason why certain people dislikes the MOBA genre is that it killed off Base Building RTS games.
Personally I don't agree with it because I don't see the comparison between a game like DOTA and a game like Command and Conquer.
Breja: I think it's at least partially true. There seem to be a new MOBA out every week, but almost no new RTS. And MOBAs are an offshoot of RTS games, the whole sub-genre came to be as mods for Starcraft and Warcraft 3. However, that is not why I dislike MOBAS (hate would be way to strong a wrod), or at least that's not the only reason. I dislike them because I simply don't like competative games much, and because people seem to treat MOBAs crazy seriously. I was there at the beginning playing those Warcraft mods with my friends, and what used to be just a silly distractions is now this huge worldwide mania. I don't even mind the "proffesional" tournaments, I mean the normal, everyday people who obsess over MOBA strategies, characters, statistics... it's why I could not possibly get into any of those games now. I would just play a match or two from time to time, just for fun. I would never "git gud" at it, I would never learn this whole new language that developed around it.
It just weirds me out to see what was a silly mod for Warcraft, right along with a paintball mod and gocart races turn into such an obession for so many.
How oversaturated is the MOBA genre? I only know at least 4.
(The BIg 3 and Infinite Crisis a DC Comics skinnned MOBA)
And if it is oversaturated than the markets will decide MOBAs will not be profitable and only LOL and DOTA and mabye Heroes will only remain with only a handful of devs making their own take on it.
Forgive me fo saying this but People were getting tired of Survival Horror games for Stagnating back in the early 2000s and sales for the classic RE games and Slient Hill. Which is why Resident Evil 4 became what it is.
Now I feel history is repeating itself because I find the Horror game genre OVERSATURATED with First Person, No Combat, simple horror games. All made to pander to the Youtube Let's Play community.
No one buys Five Night's At Freddy's, they just watch people on Youtube playing it
(OK I went far off topic :P)
Anyway its not that weird, Counter Strike was a mod for Half Life 1 and it popularized realistic military FPS.
