Fairfox: I've had to upload photos about 20-30kb smaller than 500, otherwise it says I'm over the limit*. No idea why it counts bytes differently.
Because some programs calculate 1 Megabyte as 1024 Kilobytes (1048576 bytes), while other programs as 1000 Kilobytes (1 mil bytes). Hence the difference.

skeletonbow: t's not that they can't do it, it's that they've chosen to limit the size to 500kB on purpose. I'm not sure if they have ever publicly stated an explicit reason for this limit but in lieu of that I would suspect that the reason is to reduce the amount of disk space and disk cache space the forum data consumes on the webserver in order to improve performance.
This and it also makes it easier for user to browse forums from phones and such. Recently I quitted one gaming forum because it allowed to embed videos right into posts, nvm pictures. They also weren't truly embedded, they were just links. It made the forums load very slow, and no way to browse on phone. Topping it off, that site had around 30 advertisements per page, with extremely high chances to get malware if you don't use NoScript/AdBlock addons. I am glad GOG doesn't go such road :)

Elmofongo: Well the image of my desktop is 3+ MB and its dimensions is 1920x1080.

And I cannot upload it.
There are plenty of tools to help with that...

Actually one of them coming to mind is jpegoptim where you can specify different ways it's compressed (for the huffman tables) but also specify quality or filesize and it will crop out lesser details until it fits. PNG optimization will be more work unless you're willing to lower the colors it uses, probably from 24bit to 15bit and would still look great. A good well done dithered image actually tend to look good too, even if the colors is only 256 colors.
If you don't want to install additional software like Gimp or Irfan View, try the built-in MS Paint. Sometimes it helps to open a picture file in it and just save it. This should reduce the size. Maybe that's already small enough to upload it here.

XrayStyleZ: Yeah, i`m agree with you, but there are two problems: like printed Crosmando the forum really shitty and the second problem is the money for saving all your 2mb+ pictures. But i hope that GOG stuff will solve this problem... Somewhere, sometime... in the far-far galaxy, but will. ;)
There's always the Galaxy money...
why do you need more than 500kb for a 1920x1080 jpeg? something wrong there. a png should even fall under that amount.

Elmofongo:
1. Server workload.
2. Service Level Agreement for server maintenance work.
3. Money.

2Mb is a lesser evil in current situation. If all GOG customers will start buying more and more games without a second thought than maybe GOG will hire more staff, buy more fancy servers and enhance this limit.

Elmofongo: I apoligize for my ignorance if this has been discussed before or if there is a reason why we cannot attach higher resolution images, but why can we not upload images higher than 2MB?

I run a 1080p resolution monitor and sadly I cannot attach any images that are that much in resolution.

Is their reason for this? Did something happened in the forums that needed to scale down image size? Or is it like this since GOG's inception?
If you really want to share high quality pictures, upload it to a third party service provider like dropbox and share the link?

2MB should be enough for all the regular images.

Well I learn the power of cutting images and holding the left mouse button to cut images by squares and resize them :P

So anyway as a humorous test here's a funny photo of the Game of Thrones character Arya Stark looking all derpy ;)

How I got this image was from a youtube vid with Arya and Jon and while I paused the video I ended pausing at the sametime the actress was blinking and holy shit the eyes made her face look hilarious ;D

Before you cut a .png up, try just saving it as a jpeg.
I just took your 385kb .png, & made it a 45kb jpeg & it looks the same. (or near as fuck is to swearing)

Upload images to imgur and post the link, why waste the bandwidth here. 2mb might not be big, but it is bigger than the 0 which is all that is really required when sharing images.

trentonlf: Thanks for the heads up on GIMP, had not heard of it before. I've often been frustrated trying to upload images here but couldn't because of size.
I second Tannath's recommendation of GIMP. I've used it to re-color some things, make a few new icons for KOTOR, it has some good stuff if you know graphic design (which I don't).

nightcraw1er.488: I suppose someone had to post this. The reason is so I don't post pictures of my john Thomas
Well that's selfish. Did you ever consider that some of us may WANT to see your john thomas? Huh? And here you are keeping it all to yourself. Humph, some people...

Considering DVD's use Mpeg2 and in general they use similar lower of quality, it's no surprise it got such a good result if it's aligned on the 8x8 grid (although even if it isn't, non-sharp areas will compress similarly).
