if you are really very confident that you have done nothing to give Valve your email address for this type of communication, I would suggest you should an email at them to inform them of this situation.

as this is not technical I don't think you would hear back. if they discover something, you might!

I got an EA advert in my email for their retarded Battlefield V.
I didn`t sign up for their emails, haven`t played a Battlefield game since number 3.
Haven`t had an ad from them ever until now.

Had the issue myself after one of our clients died and we took over their hosting as the family didn;t want to deal with it. (I believe the lady was a fan of a single obscure murder mysteries author. It's been a while.) Her address was firstname.lastname@gmail.tld while firstnamelastname@gmail.tld also existed.

Nope. I have no imagination. I bet you could guess my email address in one guess (and yet I still won't say it). In fact, I've also provided links in posts to this forum to places that give my real name (and yet I never say it). Having an alias is amusing, but I don't really try very hard to hide behind it. A game I contributed to a long time ago had a credits list, and only one of those was a real name (mine).

With the amount of personal information stolen (Equifax, hacked web sites, unsecured databases, etc) you can bet some of your information is out there.
Although i wonder if your email might have been used before to set up steam and then never used again? Not sure... There's plenty of dead accounts too...

I don't know if the phone number is still good, but here's the info that was getting passed around when we were protesting paid mods.

Sorry for bringing this up here, but I'm not about to create a Steam account just so I can complain that I don't have a Steam account but yet am apparently in their email database. Does anybody have a way of contacting them that doesn't involve me getting a Steam account? I guess I'll just have to forward it to spam@uce.gov and be done with it. I don't think that will get my email out of their databases, though.
Edit: I have gone ahead and forwarded the email to the FTC, for all the good that will do.

Steam isn't so bad, but it does make my hair all frizzy.

I was a Steam customer for a very brief period of time. I ended up purchasing Final Fantasy VII from Steam (because I was tired of waiting for it to be released on GOG), and I immediately asked for a refund because I simply couldn't get the game to work as a result of the amount of DRM they used. Steam has officially been banned in our house.

Thanks for your many suggestions. As a former professional system admin, I am pretty careful about what I do, and am pretty observant about things being amiss. I did not sign up for Steam and then forget about it: I have always hated the idea of programs doing unknown things on the internet, especially games, and even more especially Windows software (I run all games and all wine applications in a wrapper that disallows all network access, and back when I dual-booted, I simply disabled the network device in the device manager, among other things). I did accidentally purchase one game that required internet access, because the physical box I bought contained nothing but a downloader client and an authorization code (not for Steam; I think it was Origin). That was, in fact, the last boxed Windows game I ever bought, since I could no longer trust there actually being a game in the box. Nobody has been using my email address for their own Steam account, even by accident. Even the least reputable email-connected services expect at least one email reply, meaning that my entire email account would have to be compromised (possible, but unlikely to remain unnoticed for long).
The only plausible explanation I can come up with is that I signed up for some other service, and Valve either bought the service or the service sold my information to Valve (or Valve already owned that service without me realizing it). Whatever. It's not like my email address is a big secret, but having it show up in Steam's database was just a little aggravating. Now that I've sent a complaint to some machine at Valve (probably directly connected to /dev/null), it no longer bothers me. If Steam ever mails me again, I'll just forward it to the FTC.
