So we are having a hackathon at work and that gave me an idea.

Would people here be interested in doing a game jam? Just to see what we could come up with? Here are some ideas though nothing is set in stone.

1. Have the jam last 24 hours so that people from every time zone have a chance to participate.
2. Use a web technology so that the resulting product will natively run cross-platform.

I think we have enough technically proficient people here to hammer out a simple GOG-themed web game. Probably a few artists as well, and maybe a couple or writers or at least experienced ranters.

Anyone up for it?

If it's on a weekend, yes.

EDIT: I'm a terrible artist though...
EDIT2: And likely busy these coming weekends :( Till 2nd half of September.

Pfff, given that the best programmers usually have some wacky traits,.. your script will effectively nullify your own search quest.

I don't see why we can't do it on a weekend! =)

And don't worry about being "terrible." We'll be doing this just for fun.
Sounds interesting, albeit almost impossible to coordinate.
i understood nothing from the first post. the other posts make me think you want to create a web game within 24 hours for gog, just for the sake of it?

i could maybe help. i'm not exactly sure on the facts. i have html5 training and playing around with unreal engine 4. i don't know if you want a pay game or free game...details... :)

Not "for GOG", but themed around GOG (so, probably primarily for the GOG community, as few others would get any included references). Since it's just for fun, and a very quick endeavour (24 hours isn't much time to develop a game on, even using the rather simple combination of HTML and Javascript), being paid for it is pretty much out of the question.

EDIT: I don't know of how much help I can be in the development, but I have an idea of what I'd like to see.

I don't know how many have played - or remember - a Win95/98 game called Virus that built the levels from your directory structure and used audio files and images it found in those folders as background audio and wall textures.

If the game could grab (almost) live data from the forum - either as a whole, a certain forum, or just a single thread specifically for that game - and include participating users as enemies or NPC's, show attached images, screenshots of linked pages, and maybe throw posts through text-to-speech. Of course this wouldn't quite be live, but data would be grabbed, processed and cached every so often.

The coordination would be mad tricky, but it's possible. The question is more of whether we have enough competent coders/artists/etc. here who would all be willing to put 24 hours aside to work on this.
It's a fun idea and I'd love to help, it's just that I have no tech skills whatsoever. In terms of the game, I could assist in writing, if that even matters. In terms of the project, I might be a pretty heavy help with coordination since I know darn near everybody in this place and then some, so I know who to contact and hold some decent sway.
Sounds interesting. I'll try to join in. I have a lot of experience with these. In any game jam, even when all people are co-located the trick is to have a few small teams working on different projects, rather than build one single big thing. As an example, 1 software engineer, 1 programmer, 3 artists/creative. Otherwise chaos ensues :) Also in my experience varying skill levels do not matter all that much, BUT as demoed above, it helps to have a technical lead with some familiarity of software engineering in each team (e.g., a CS or engineering person, as opposed to a self-taught coder), so that others don't lose track. Not absolutely necessary, though.
I like these ideas, especially using existing assets!

We could write a forum bot that asks trivia questions and uses screenshots and/or text excerpts from the store. It'll need to crawl the forum, find mentions of itself, detect commands, post questions, read answers, keep a tally of winners, etc.

On one hand, necroing a thread started by a user who's account as been deleted is sad. :P

On the other hand, I see that thread OP is Aaric, which means Alaric is completely gone from the forum.

REJOICE!
