Hello,
A recent spurt of boredom mixed with a video of Pharaoh and Cleopatra made by a famous Youtuber (Sips) has brought me to this GOG site. I loved this game and will be getting back into it(Once I find my CD copy). I have been browsing many of the games from my childhood, as well as looking to try some of the older "classic" titles. I plan on getting Empire Earth, Heroes 3, as well as Ultima 7 or Ultima Underworld 1 and 2. But going back to the late 90's famous city builders, I was made aware that the same people behind Pharaoh and Cleopatra have also made quite a few other highly rated city builders such as Caesar 3 and Zeus/Poseidon(Acropolis). I wanted to give these games a try as well, but due to current budgeting I only want to get one for now. I have looked into both games and each one is highly rated as well as looking really fun to play. I am currently indecisive about which one to get, so I figured I would go out and ask the community about which game to get and why? So Caesar 3 vs Zeus/Poseidon(Acropolis), which one should I try out and what is your reasoning behind your choice. All feedback is greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Welcome to GOG. Have you by chance looked at the reviews for both?. I do remember in past sales people have recommended Zeus/Poseidon as the one to get (not that Caesar 3 isnt too shabby) :)

I have looked a reviews for both games and each is very highly rated.
Zeus/Poseidon is a good choice, just as Pharaoh/Cleopatra combo. One thing i miss on GOG is Caesar2 ( can work in dosbox, if i recall correctly ), a city builder where you have the strategy elements that you will see later in Pharaoh/Cleopatra and none of those nonsenses with gods. It was a pure city builder and highly enjoyable. Other missing City builders from Impressions on GOG: Caesar 4 and Emperor: Rise of Middle Kingdom.

If you want a more modern city builder: the Sim City series and the Cities XL/City Life series. As a medieval city builder: Banished ( will be launched this month and will also contains some survival elements - you need to address the needs of population through seasons )

First of all, welcome to GOG.

To be honest, between Caesar 3, Pharaoh and Zeus there isn't a whole lot of difference. There are obviously minor differences in building layouts and micromanagement, but on the whole, they're the same game powered by the same engine. It's worth having all three (plus Emperor), but no one is better than the others.

Also, if you're a city builder fan, GOG has Sim City 2000 and.Tropico 1, 2 and 3.

Both work with GOG versions.

Caesar 2 does work to an extent in DOSbox, and it's better than the half-baked Windows version, but it's rather glitchy and has a tendency to cause DOSbox to freeze.

Would love to see Caesar 2 on GOG. By far my favorite. Also, Tropico 4 with all DLC's would be nice, too...
Zeus for me. I enjoy the mythology elements (with the gods walking the streets if you build their temples), the military system where you can send troops and conquer your neighbours, the separation between high-class and low-class houses, and the "campaign" where you have your main city and the colonies thus not having to start every "level" from scratch. But above all, those wonderfull blockades that prevent your workers from delivering food to places with no houses. The lack of those blockades is why I haven't been able to get into playing Cleopatra (I played Caesar before Zeus).

Well, roadblocks on Pharaoh are pretty ok, but I agree Zeus is even better. What I've loved in Pharaoh are the huge monuments :D

Check out Children of the Nile. I haven't made much progression but it doesn't feel too challenging so it's more of a game you play to relax than anything else. Anyway, it has a great atmosphere as it makes you feel like you are watching a settlement thrive in ancient egypt.

Texture pack Here's a great texture pack as well that I can confirm works with the GOG version.

Children of the Nile - and Caesar IV - have been developped by Tilted Mill. Their lead designer is none other than Chris Beatrice, lead designer on Pharaoh and Zeus.

Infidel! You'd better check whether rats haven't had a go at your granaries. Accidents do happen, you know? ;)

I like sim city 2000 a lot.
major fan of Pharaoh and ironically its why i came here! so welcome my fellow goger who followed the same path as me. my recommendation is Zeus/Poseidon i ad enjoying it as much as Pharaoh and the few improvements it adds to the mechanics really does make things more enjoyable.

am also a fan of Children of the Nile and several others mentioned here.

I would recommend Zeus/Poseidon as it improves on the good elements of Pharaoh (continuing same city development vs starting every new mission from scratch is a big thing for me). The gods are more involved in the game than Pharaoh but there are no big monuments and in total its an easier game than Pharaoh.

Ceasar 3 is mainly Pharaoh without improvements (no roadblocks, much less control on your storage and grocery) and still no big monuments. So I would only pick Ceasar3 if you found Pharaoh too easy and want to have a challenge by making it more frustrating as you have less control on your city.
