Config.nt is missing and it will not allow me to run setup(for controls not the installation) for some of the games I have bought(Duke 3D and Blood 1), is there some way to get this file back or some other solution to my frustrating problem. Any help is wanted and mostly needed, also if you need more information just ask.

My problem with Blood is no sound and Duke would not work unless I ran it as administrator and it will not let me run either games control setup or any other features besides the actual game. When I try to run the setup it says that the mentioned above Config.nt file is missing.

Also please do not give a link to another site unless you really think it would help(I'm about fifteen so I am certainly not the most computer literate.



If anyone comes to this topic for help then please keep in mind that multiple solutions are included.

It sounds like you are trying to run a DOS game outside of DOSBox, which will not work. What shortcuts (if any) are you using to run the config setup?

Config.nt is a critical system file; if it is missing from your computer or corrupted you won't be able to install programs.
You can recreate it with notepad.

Open notepad then copy and paste the following:

dos=high, umb
device=%SystemRoot%\system32\himem.sys
files=40


Then you need to save the file change "Save as type" to All Files
Name the file Config.nt
Save to C:\Windows\System32

If you have Vista you might need you save to a somewhere else first and then copy and paste the file to C:\Windows\System32 given administrator permission when you do.

It's not a critical system file, it's just part of the legacy MS-DOS subsystem, which is not even present in 64-bit versions of Vista or higher. It can be re-created on a 32-bit OS, but it shouldn't even be needed to run anything from GOG as all their DOS products run in DOSBox.

Thanks for the help I have not tried it yet so, this may not be the solution although it sounds solid. If anyone wants to know how I lost this file I will explain now, I impulsively deleted every file(that it let me) in system32 on accident as I had no idea what the files are for. I'm sure this will give a few people a laugh but hey I'm fourteen (fifteen soon) and really never looked at computer files before I did this. So please do not be a judge of my intelligence I make As now more than I did as a kid and I have an above-average IQ.

Reply: I have not used any shortcuts so that might be it.
After typing the above I tried making SETUP.EXE a shortcut and I still get the message that the required system file is missing(Config.nt).

I should add the whole point of this SETUP.EXE for me was just to make the game wasd and more functional on my PC which I suppose everyone does as the Duke3D controls are really messed up normally(wasd just works). I can't wait until I get the game working It looks so fun and I have played the Xbox Live demo which was awesome. The game does work just like all my other GOG games just not the way I want it to. Perhaps I should settle with eDuke32, although since its my first time playing it I want it to be as vanilla as possible. If anyone reads this keep the solutions coming.

The System32 directory contains practically all of the key files of your operating system. Deleting anything from there is an incredibly bad thing to do. Rather than trying to just get this game working, you might want to consider fixing everything else you probably broke when you deleted those files. This also raises a question: did you delete files from any other directory on your PC and if so, where were they? For future reference, do not delete anything from the Windows directory (System32 is in the Windows directory) unless you have specific instructions that require it, Occasionally you might need to delete something in there if you are trying to do something like fix a virus infection, otherwise, leave it alone.

As for the shortcut question, I wasn't implying that you needed to create a shortcut and use that to run the setup, I was implying that you need to use the shortcuts that were installed in the Start menu or on your desktop when you installed the game. You can't launch any of the executables for DOS based games directly, they need to be launched within DOSBox, which the GOG-created shortcuts are already configured to do.

Trust me I definitely don't plan on deleting anything else like that, It was really just a horrible mistake. I just tried what you said and it worked, but only the first time and now it never shows anything but a lightly colored screen with a black box under it. I tried running as an administrator and it still seems to mess up, at least I have gotten a step further.
