I became a Doors-head in high school, but to me his poetry went beyond what they did with song. He was a voice of the changing cultural climate, traditional yet modern.
I don't know why I like this one so much. It's a classic and I love the atmosphere.

THE RAVEN.

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore —
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door.
“ ’Tis some visiter,” I muttered, “tapping at my chamber door —
Only this and nothing more.”

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December;
And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; — vainly I had sought to borrow
From my books surcease of sorrow — sorrow for the lost Lenore —
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore —
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken, sad, uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me — filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
“ ’Tis some visiter entreating entrance at my chamber door —

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,

The following poem is simply powerful and epic. Also, I watched "Back to School" a lot growing up, so I hear this poem in the voice of Rodney Dangerfield.

Our national anthem (in bold) is part of a greater poem from one of our most celebrated poets, France Prešeren (which could be translated as France the Cheerful... his life as a whole was anything but cheerful...). Quick back story: at the time when he was alive, our nation was under Austro-Hungarian rule. While not exactly a tyranny, some people, mostly the intellectuals, advocated for greater autonomy. Prešeren was one of them, and some of his poems were quite nationalistic, and that at the time when such outspoken nationalism wasn't exactly encouraged. The official language was German anyway.
Here's a translation of the poem (by Janko Lavrin):

The vintage, friends, is over,

Not with a bang but a whimper.

I love this poem because of it's sheer levels of imagery and metaphorical construction. It has so many possible interpretations. A testament to the futility of war, or possibly even Eliot's own failed marriage. Like any good poem it's meaning is very much open to interpretation and it stands the test of time. It's influence on modern culture has been rather far reaching too, extending to films (such as Apocalypse Now), and even gaming (such as Metal Gear Solid 2). For me, it is one of the key works that started my life long love of literature, poetry and music.

I don't know why I like this, I just do. The story is sad but there something "majestic" about it.

This is a poem written by Jenny Schwartz, who writes poetry and novels inspired by steampunk. I see this as a woman who has a daughter who somehow has lost her ability to walk. In fashion of the genre, the mother has replaced parts of her daughter with clockwork, so the young girl can continue dancing, and the mother winds her gears again and again until her hands bleed.
I love this poem, first of all because I love steampunk but also because I think it is moving that the mother will do anything to let her daughter dance.


She had never cared what others thought
and didn’t now
that clockwork let “the cripple” dance
light as thistledown.

They didn’t know
the agony to wind the legs,
the bleeding hands that worked the key.
She wrapped her palms in linen rags
and watched her daughter dance.
This is a poem I wrote for a story that I also wrote. haha. I'm rather fond of it, though it's probably nothing special.

Life had been to me a wild ride,
yet you were always by my side.
Life had never been to me so kind,
yet you were there for me to find.

Edgar Allan Poe: Annabel Lee
One of my favorite poems. There was a time I knew it by heart (in Spanish). Good choice!

Another one that I love. The last 3 lines are the best known part of the poem:

The games in question don't really interest me, but I love poetry... Here's one I wrote in high school when we had to write a Chauciarian poem based on one of the seven deadly sins:

Woe to the fool, that his own trump doth blow,
Pity unto him that boastfully glows!
He that finds perfection in his own eyes,
He that b’lieves himself infinitely wise,
Fear for he that can see not what he err,
For he that cries, “Why shalt I care?
“My life is just, no sins do I enact,
“No wrongs have I, t’is no other than fact,

At the mote in thy friend’s eye doth he sneer,
