This question / problem has been solved by Miaghstirimage
They get a note that says "Can't redeem game you already own". Complete with a missing word and/or a grammar mistake.

He won't be able to redeem it. See, when you buy a game as a gift you get a code which can be redeemed, you don't send it directly to a users account.

You might be able to exchange that code for another game that costs the same, but you would need to contact support and I don't know if there's a precedent for this.

In short, if he has the game you're stuck with that code to give away to someone else (or redeem yourself).
You (or they) would be able to gift the code to someone else instead. The gift certificate codes are listed on your My Account >> My Games >> gifted page.
