I was thinking about buying the first alice on xbla, since I've heard great things about it and it's only 10$. But do you need a copy of Alice:Madness Returns to buy and play it? If so, that's idiotic. I also wanted to know if anyone has it for 360 or ps3, and if the controls work well, since everything else is a straight port.

As I understand it, it will be Live content available for MS points, with a code in new copies to get people to buy new instead of used. At least it beats a dress or useless widget code. :)

Just checked, 800 MS points.

Unfortunately, you cannot buy alice as a standalone item. It is strictly being sold as an addon for those who didn't buy the game new and an unused game code didn't come with the used purchase. It should also be noted the launcher for alice is only through the main menu of madness returns so there are no workarounds either.

So yes you do need the madness disc to play.

This is the correct response. You need the Alice: Madness Returns disc in your xbox to play the original Alice.
Well that's dumb.

No, that's EA.
What's dumb is that Alice 1 has to be launched from within Alice 2. Quite possibly the dumbest thing I've ever bore witness to.

And I don't even know if that's hyperbole.

I would imagine it will eventually go up for sale on its own, if not on consoles then at least on the PC through sites like this one.

Don't worry, by end of summer you'll be able to buy it, the frenzy to buy Alice 2 will be over by then.
I beg to differ, I am currently on the Live site in another tab and it seems that the only thing stopping me from buying Alice 1 is a lack of 213 MS points. I clicked on Madness returns, clicked on American McGee's Alice, and it popped up with the confirmation page.

Unless it happens AFTER you pay for it, it seems that buying #1 for 800 points via the website is completely possible. I recall the pre-release advertising seemed to indicate you had to have the second one, and on my PC digital copy I have to access it via the second games launcher, but I did not attempt to purchase it separately on PC.

Has anyone actually tried to buy it via live and failed, or is this all speculation still?

Nobody's stopping you from buying it. They'll let you buy it. You just can't use it without the disc. It clearly says it's an add-on.

http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/American-McGees-Alice/064efb92-dc4f-4e09-8283-2ab35ad7ed73?cid=search

See how it has a controller icon with a + on it? That means it's an add-on that goes with something else. By contrast Duke Nukem 3D http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Duke-Nukem-3D/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258410901?cid=search, Has just a controller icon and says download full game.

It's been confirmed on other sites I've visited. You need the disc or else you're just giving away 800 points.
